NFL Best Bets

Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions

The Lions are one of the teams with a Week 18 motivation level best described as "squishy." Detroit is locked into no worse than the No. 3 seed and could conceivably move up to the No. 2 seed with a win over the Vikings coupled with a Cowboys loss to the Commanders. The second leg of that daily double seems unlikely, with Dallas favored over Washington by nearly two touchdowns. Lions head coach Dan Campbell says he will play his starters, but Campbell might pull back on the reins early. Jahmyr Gibbs splits snaps and touches with David Montgomery and is averaging 11.6 carries over his last eight games. He'll be up against a Vikings team that has allowed the 13th-fewest rushing yards and 3.8 yards per carry to RBs.

Bet: Jahmyr Gibbs UNDER 51.5 Rushing Yards (-115)

Orlando Magic @ Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets had a miraculous comeback last night after trailing by 13 heading into the fourth quarter, which ended with Nikola Jokic hitting a three-point buzzer-beater to get the win at Golden State. It's not easy playing on back-to-back nights, but they have been one of the better teams on their home court at 14-3.

The Magic come into this game limping as their injury list reads a mile long. Franz Wagner, Jonathan Isaac, Gary Harris, Joe Ingles and Markelle Fultz are already out, while Wendell Carter Jr. is listed as a game-time decision.

It is tough for a young team to have key players out, and as a result, you'll see Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs get a bump in minutes. Taking on the champs on the road, even with the rest advantage, is hard without half of your top players.

Bet: Nuggets -10 (-110)

Winnipeg Jets @ Anaheim Ducks

The Jets have been rolling lately, going 8-0-2 over their past 10 games while ranking fourth in expected goals for percentage. However, while the Jets have been playing wonderfully, they are actually due for a bit of regression. Winnipeg's goals-for percentage at 5-on-5 over their past 10 games is 73.68%, with a shooting percentage over 10% and a 95.3 save percentage. Those numbers are incredible, but most likely aren't sustainable.

The Ducks have been less impressive, ranking 23rd in xGF% at 5-on-5. But there are a couple of reasons I like Anaheim in this spot.

First of all, Winnipeg will play the second leg of a California back-to-back. They survived against the lowly Sharks 2-1 Thursday night in a game the Jets had to work harder to win than they had probably hoped.

Anaheim will also have the advantage in net. John Gibson should make the start for the Ducks, and he ranks 18th in GSAE. On the flip side, we'll see Winnipeg backup Laurent Brossoit between the pipes after starter Connor Hellebuyck played Thursday in San Jose. This matters significantly because while Brossoit has been respectable this year (0.8 goals saved above expected), Hellebuyck is leading the league in that stat.

Ultimately, I like the spot for Anaheim to pull the upset on home ice.

Bet: Anaheim Ducks (+160)
