Hideki Matsuyama 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions
Itâs homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.
Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.
But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.
Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 â his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.
Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.
Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.
McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.
The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Hideki Matsuyama 2023 British Open Betting Outlook
The Open has been a tricky major for Matsuyama to navigate. Surprisingly, his tournament debut in 2013 (T6) was his best finish, and he has not cracked the top 10 since. Heâs been inconsistent in The Open but has been fairly consistent in PGA Tour events in 2023, with only one missed cut in his last 10 tournaments. He ranks in the top 20 on Tour in total strokes gained, strokes gained: approach to green, and scrambling. However, his driving distance ranks 125th, and on top of that heâs 112th in strokes gained: putting. The links-style golf course at Royal Liverpool will demand a lot from Matsuyamaâs approach and short game in order for him to compete. If he can navigate his way around the bunkers and undulations and slightly improve his putting, Matsuyama has a good shot to contend with the way heâs been hitting approach shots.

I wouldnât mind sprinkling a little bit on Matsuyama at +7500 (PointsBet), and I also like a top-20 bet on Matsuyama at plus odds.
