Justin Rose 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.

Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.

But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.

Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.

Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.

Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.

McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Justin Rose 2023 British Open Betting Outlook

Justin Rose is no stranger to Royal Liverpool, as he played the course when it hosted The Open back in 2014. The Englishman finished T23 in that event. His performances at this specific major have been all over the place, as he has missed the cut five times, has five top-20 finishes, and finished T4 as an amateur. in 1998. However, we can take prior outings with a grain of salt considering that the British Open is constantly switching locations. There are a pair of stats that make me interested in backing Rose this weekend. He's ranked 31st on Tour in driving accuracy (64.2%) and sits at 78th in greens in regulation (66.4%). As long as the 42-year-old can avoid costly mistakes and play solid golf, he should be in a good spot heading into the weekend rounds.

Justin Rose 2023 British Open Betting Advice

I don't feel confident backing Rose to win this tournament outright. However, I will take a shot with him at +175 to place inside of the top 20 (via DraftKings). That's too good of a payout to pass up for an England native who has a history at the course and is playing sound, fundamental golf at the moment.
