Justin Thomas 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions
Itâs homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.
Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.
But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.
Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 â his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.
Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.
Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.
McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.
The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Justin Thomas 2023 British Open Betting Outlook
Two-time major champion Justin Thomas is looking to snap an ugly streak at the majors. Over his last five major championships, the American has finished no better than T37 while missing two cuts. On top of the struggles on the big stage, the 30-year-old simply hasn't been playing his best golf. Thomas has missed the cut in three of his last four tournaments and only has a pair of top-20 finishes in his last eight outings. One of the key issues that I see with Thomas is his inability to drive accurately. His 56.8% driving accuracy is just 127th on the tour. Considering the deep grass off the fairways at Royal Liverpool, that's not a stat that makes me confident in backing him.
Justin Thomas 2023 British Open Betting Advice
I'm completely staying away from Justin Thomas at this weekend's Open Championship. In fact, this may be a good opportunity to fade him and take a shot on him to miss the cut.
