La Liga Odds, Picks & Predictions for Matchday 2 (2022)

The 2022-23 La Liga season is off and running as week one is in the books. At the top, the usual suspects got their first wins of the season, as Atletico Madrid and Villareal both picked up dominant week one victories.

The same can be said for the bottom, as Getafe, Elche, and Valladolid were on the opposite sides of those beatings.

Let’s take a closer look at Matchday 2 and how things might play out in Spain.

Sevilla vs. Valladolid

Following a season that saw them climb into the fourth and final Champions League spot on the table in its final weeks, Sevilla got off to a less than desired start last week, losing to Osasuna 2-1 following a penalty shot in the 74′. In what was a chippy game, there were 8 yellow cards handed out in total. Sevilla could never find their rhythm, especially in the second half.

As for Valladolid, their first game since being promoted in the offseason went about as was expected, losing 0-3 to Villareal in a game that was tied 0-0 going into the half.

With little in the way of elite scoring threats to speak of, I expect it to be a long season for the newcomers and for Sevilla to put it on them early following a slow start last week.

Pick: Sevilla 1H +100

Celta Vigo vs. Real Madrid

Winning La Liga last season by a margin of 13 points, the expectations are once again sky high for Real Madrid heading into this one. In week one, those expectations seemed to get to them a bit, allowing an early goal to the recently promoted Almeria on the road, failing to find the back of the net until late into the second half.

Scoring two goals over 15 minutes, Real Madrid ultimately prevailed 2-1, scoring just twice despite putting up 29 shots, with 15 of them on target.

For Celta Viga, they had a 2-1 win in their sights before allowing a penalty shot to go in extra time. It’s also worth noting that Celta Vigo committed 17 fouls in the match, picking up five yellow cards, including every player on their back line getting one.

After playing their first match on short rest following a game in the UEFA Super Cup, Real Madrid will now have a full week of recovery before almost surely picking up their second win of the season.

Pick: Real Madrid -145
