Legal online sports betting in North Carolina officially begins at noon, just in time for the excitement of the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments. This allows individuals aged 21 and over to legally place bets on a wide array of sporting events, ranging from professional and college sports to Olympic-style competitions.
The state’s decision to legalize online sports betting is seen as a step towards ensuring that bets on sporting events are conducted in a secure, fair manner and under regulations aimed at fostering responsible gaming. “Bets on sporting events have been made for as long as those events have taken place, but this time they will be legal, they will be done securely and fairly, and they will be made under rules designed to encourage responsible gaming,” stated Commission Chair Ripley Rand.
Previously, sports betting in North Carolina was confined to three casinos operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Catawba Indian Nation, both of which have now secured online licenses from the state. This expansion into online betting positions North Carolina as the 30th state, alongside the District of Columbia, to embrace mobile sports wagering.
