Maryland Terrapins vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
Leg 1 - Jahmir Young â Over 17.5 Points (+100)
As a senior, Jahmir Young moved from Charlotte to play near Upper Marlboro, Maryland. After averaging 16.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.3 steals per game for the Terps, Young was named to the All-Big Ten second team.
In what will be the biggest game of his career, I like for the senior to score well beyond this number.
Leg 2 - Erik Stevenson â Over 15.5 Points (-155)
Erik Stevenson, who averages 15.5 points per game and shoots 38.1 percent from 3-point range, is the Mountaineersâ offensive leader. He was a third-team All-Big 12 selection. The Mountaineersâ offense is well-rounded thanks to Tre Mitchell (11.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Kedrian Johnson (11.2 ppg), and Emmitt Matthews Jr. (10.4 ppg).
With players all around him that can score as well, I like for Stevenson to have no trouble hitting his usual spots in this matchup.
Leg 3 - West Virginia -1.5 (-125)
In terms of adjusted offensive efficiency, West Virginia is ranked 15th in Division I by the college basketball stats website KenPom.com. Meanwhile, Maryland is ranked top-35 in terms of both offensive and defensive effectiveness. Hugginsâ team plays more up-tempo but not excessively fast, whereas Willardâs offense moves at a deliberate pace.
The Mountaineers have claimed victories in both of the two meetings between the programs this century. The victor on Thursday will almost certainly play Saturdayâs second-round opponent and top overall seed Alabama. Huggins, the Mountaineersâ head coach since 2007-08, has led his team to four further Sweet 16 appearances in addition to the 2010 Final Four. West Virginia, which missed out on the NCAA field last year, is back, similar to Maryland, but with more experience across the court and especially in the coachâs box.
Even though West Virginia finished the fiercely tough Big 12 with just a 7-11 record, that record featured victories over TCU, Iowa State, and Kansas State, three other tournament teams. Marylandâs Big Ten run doesnât read quite the same, and I think we see WVU pull away from this one in force late.
