Masters 2023: Sungjae Im Betting Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

It's Masters week, the unofficial start of golf season — at least for those of us in the northern parts of the country.

The Masters is the first major of the golf season and arguably the best. Augusta National is a special place — a visually stunning course that tests the mettle of the best players in the world. Augusta requires precision approach shots and a deft touch on pitches and chips. Its lightning-fast greens can make even the best putters in the world look like amateurs.

Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won his first major at Augusta last year and is among the betting favorites this week, along with Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

As if the world's greatest golfers taking on arguably the world's greatest course wasn't enough, we get some extra spice with some of the prodigal sons of the LIV Tour joining their former colleagues in this week's field. Players in the Saudi-backed LIV Tour have been banned from playing in PGA Tour events, but they are welcome at Augusta, which means we'll see former Masters champs Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson.

Welcome to the second annual BettingPros Guide to The Masters. We're going to drill down on the many wagering opportunities this tournament presents. We'll take a closer look at the golfers with the best chances of earning the coveted Green Jacket. We'll examine which bets look like sucker plays and which bets provide better value than a $1.50 pimento cheese sandwich at an Augusta concessions tent.

Sungjae Im Course History

Im had an impressive Masters debut in 2020, opening with a 66 on Thursday and eventually finishing tied for second, five shots behind Dustin Johnson. Im was paired with DJ in the final round that year, but after applying early pressure with birdies on No. 2 and No. 3, Im made consecutive bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7 and wasn’t able to make a serious run. In 2021, Im was -2 through his first eight holes but shot a 42 on the back nine that included a quadruple-bogey on No. 15. He followed his opening-round 77 with an 80 on Friday. Last year, Im held the lead on Thursday night after shooting an impressive 67 in breezy conditions, but he went +5 over the next three days and tied for eighth.

Sungjae Im Recent Form

After tying for fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January and tying for sixth at the WM Phoenix Open two weeks later, Im seemed dialed in. He seemed to lose his mojo when the Tour shifted from the West to Florida, failing to crack the top 40 at the Genesis Invitational or the Honda Classic. But Im seems to be back on the right track of late, tying for 21st at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, tying for sixth at The Players Championship, and winning two of three matches at last month’s match play event, including an 8 & 6 thrashing of Maverick McNealy in the first round.

Sungjae Im Betting Outlook

Two years ago, Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese golfer to win The Masters. Im would be the first Korean. Im, who just turned 25, is one of the best young players in the world. He has no glaring holes in his game and has contended at Augusta before. But Im hasn’t won an event since 2021, and while he offers value as an outright selection at odds in the +3500 to +4000 range, I think it makes more sense to bet Im for a top-10 finish. (He’s +320 on DraftKings for a top-10 finish.) Im already has two top-10 finishes in three Masters starts, and his current form suggests he has a good chance to be in contention well into the weekend.

Best Bet: Sungjae Im Top 10 Finish (+320 DraftKings)
