Miami Hurricanes vs. Central Connecticut Blue Devils Odds & Game Pick (2021)

Miami has not gotten off to the start they were hoping for this year, starting 1-2 with two bad losses against Alabama and Michigan State, then barely winning against Appalachian State. Both sides of the ball have struggled during the first three games of the season. The defense hasn't been able to stop anything. Michigan State ran the ball all over Miami last weekend. On the offensive side of the ball, they have relied on WR Charleston Rambo and QB D'Eriq King to do too much. They need additional weapons to step up if they want to get back on track this season.

Central Connecticut went 11-2 during the 2019 season before taking 2020 off due to COVID-19. They have already matched their loss total for that year, starting 1-2 this season. They did lose their starting quarterback and running back in 2019, turning over the offense to sophomore QB Romelo Williams. Defensively they have struggled as well, giving up 56 points to Southeast Louisiana last weekend. This team will have a hard time against Miami because of the difference in talent on their rosters.

Overview

Miami's offense has struggled this year. They have played good defenses, which makes it hard to read them. QB D'Eriq King will be difficult for the Central Connecticut defense to contain. When the play breaks down, he is mobile enough to extend plays with his legs. That will help them get their passing game established, and then they can turn the ball over to RB Cam'Ron Harris. Offensively, Miami should have no issues scoring against Central Connecticut's defense.

The defense for Miami is going to be the big question in this game. Alabama and Michigan State were able to do whatever they wanted against Miami's defense. Central Connecticut doesn't have the offensive talent Miami has, but they will have opportunities to find the end zone against this defense. Miami can get pressure on the quarterback with five sacks so far in the season.

Central Connecticut has struggled on both sides of the ball this year. They have an inexperienced offense and a kicker who is hitting 50% of his kicks. Central Connecticut will have to lean on wide receivers Everett Wormley and Isiah Williams throughout this game. They could struggle to get the ball out consistently to these guys. Defensively, Central Connecticut has not been able to stop the passing game. Teams are dominating them through the air, and that is just what Miami will want to do, establish this passing game to start running the ball. Central Connecticut will struggle against a more talented Miami team.

Bottom Line

Miami has a quick turnaround this week. They play Virginia on Thursday. Once they get up, they will start resting starters, and there is a good chance they are already looking toward the Virginia game, prep-wise. Miami is already bad against the spread. Then you throw in all these additional factors, and it turns into great value for Central Connecticut. Central Connecticut doesn't look good, and any other week I think Miami covers. With the short week that Miami has ahead of them, everything works in favor of Central Connecticut.

Pick: Central Connecticut +34.5 (-110)
