But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.
Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.
Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.
Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.
McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

Min Woo Lee generated some buzz last week at the Renaissance Club by hitting a 225-yard pitching wedge (!) onto the green in a stiff Scottish wind. He’d like to earn buzz for a more substantial reason this week at Hoylake, and he’s capable of contending. Lee finished T21 at St Andrews last year in his second Open appearance after missing the cut at Royal St. George’s in 2021. He finished T5 at the U.S. Open last month and T18 at the PGA Championship in May. Lee also finished T6 at the Players Championship, so he clearly feels comfortable in big events. He currently ranks fourth in strokes gained putting, and is his putter heats up at Royal Liverpool, he could be a factor come Sunday.
