Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers
The Tampa Bay Rays ganged up on the Tigers yesterday. The same is likely going to happen today.
Joey Wentz will take the mound for the Tigers. Last year, he finished with a 5.21 xFIP with under 20% strikeouts. He also walked over 10% of batters and earned 36.6% of ground balls. The lefty will take on a Rays lineup that should have a full right-handed lineup. The righties in the Rays lineup have hit a .330 wOBA against lefties dating back to last year.
On the other hand, Jeffrey Springs, another lefty, will pitch for the Rays. Last year, he had an xFIP of 3.82. He struck out 26.2% of batters and kept walks to just 5.6%. Lefties had more power against Springs last year, but heâs facing a Tigers lineup that will likely have just one lefty in the lineup.
Back the Rays.
Bet: Rays -1.5 (-105)
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
The Pirates are going to pitch Vince Velasquez for todayâs matchup. Velasquez had a 5.28 xFIP last season and allowed an ISO of .221 to righties in 178 plate appearances.
The Reds will have a balanced lineup, including righties like Jonathan India, Tyler Stephenson, Will Myers, and Spencer Steer. The lefties also have some power. The Reds will strike out against any righty this year, but theyâll also hit some long balls here and there.
Meanwhile, Graham Ashcraft developed a whole lot over the winter. He had an xFIP of 4.54 and struck out only 15.3%. But his velocity has increased, and heâs added a pitch to his arsenal.
Ashcraft already earned over 53% of ground balls last season. If his strikeout numbers increase and he can continue to get a high rate of ground balls, he will have an excellent season.
Bet: Reds (-135)
