Ronald Acuna Jr. (+360)
We have a 2021 World Series rematch on the docket tonight, and it was the Braves who earned a 6-1 series-opening win over the Astros last night. The two sides are back at it this evening, and this interleague contest features a pitching matchup between Reynaldo Lopez and Hunter Brown. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET from Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Brown has been horrendous out of the gate in 2024, going 0-2 with a 16.43 ERA and 3.91 WHIP. The right-hander has conceded two home runs over 7.2 innings of work, which equates to a 2.35 HR/9 rate. Meanwhile, Ronald Acuna Jr. is still looking for his first home run of the year. The reigning NL MVP is coming off a season where he smashed a career-high 41 bombs, so I think it's only a matter of time before the power returns. It could be as soon as tonight for Acuna Jr., as he squares off against Brown, whom he's 2-3 (.667) against with a pair of doubles. Let's take a shot on Acuna Jr. to register his first homer of the season.
Seth Brown (+475)
The Athletics are playing respectable baseball to start the 2024 campaign, but they dropped last night's series opener to the Cardinals in a 3-1 contest. Oakland turns to JP Sears to guide them back into the win column, while St. Louis opts for Lance Lynn to handle the starting pitching responsibilities. First pitch is set for 9:40 p.m. ET from the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, Calif.
Lynn has been a serviceable option for the Red Birds this season, going 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over three starts. However, the right-hander has conceded three home runs already, giving him a 1.98 HR/9 rate. Lynn's coming off a season where that number finished at 2.16, so it's safe to say the veteran has been having trouble with the long ball lately.
At +475, I think it's worth a flier on Seth Brown to take Lynn deep tonight. Brown has a homer this season, and it came on April 11 in Oakland's 1-0 win over Texas. The left-handed batter hit all 14 of his home runs against right-handed pitchers last season while posting a .235 average compared to a .158 average against LHP. As for the head-to-head numbers, Brown is 4-14 (.286) against Lynn with a pair of big flies.
Paul Goldschmidt (+360)
Keeping it in the same game, I'll lock in Paul Goldschmidt to hit a tank. The veteran first baseman hasn't been great to start the year, hitting just .183 with one home run. However, this is a great righty/lefty matchup for âGoldyâ to get back on track as he faces Sears. The 18-year-old southpaw enters tonight's game with a 5.17 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 15.2 innings of work. He owns a 1.15 HR/9 rate this season, which is down from his mark of 1.78 last year. Goldschmidt is 2-2 (1.000) with a home run against Sears, and I think he's primed to go yard again tonight.
