MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds, Picks & Predictions: Monday (7/31)

On the last day of July and the last full day before the trade deadline, we have ten games on the schedule. This time of year becomes difficult because lineups for today can be a bit unclear as players who could be on the move may sit to avoid injury. While I do not believe there are any starters scheduled who could be on the move, it is also possible that someone we pick gets scratched before first pitch so keep your eye on the news to see if anything catches your eye. Let’s take a look at today’s best NRFI bets.

Monday’s Best MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Bets

Cleveland Guardians at Houston Astros 8:10 ET

JP France has been a revelation and a testament to the elite player development factory that is the Houston Astros. The right-hander does not have overwhelming stuff, but through some HR limitation and a bit of good luck, he is pitching to a sub-three ERA. He has been good with a 0.292 wOBA allowed the first time through the order and is facing a Cleveland offense that has been middle of the road the last thirty days. There is talent at the top, but for a pitcher who does not rely on the strikeout, this might be a good setup against a high-contact lineup. Noah Syndergaard is making his Cleveland debut today, and this bet will likely come down to him. He has been downright awful this season, and while it has all been bad, he is getting jumped early by opposing offenses. While the Astros’ lineup is back to full strength, making this one really scary, we have to hope Cleveland saw something with Syndergaard, and with the odds on this bet being plus money, we have to take the chance that this is true.

Pick: +110

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays 7:07 ET

The Orioles are fresh off a Sunday night drubbing of the New York Yankees, and in the game, they jumped Luis Severino for seven runs in the first inning. Chris Bassitt gets to face them today, and while he is not a superstar, he is once again pitching very solidly this season. He does not take the ball in the first inning and immediately dominates, but as his splits show, he gets a little better over the course of the game. However, the 0.327 wOBA allowed the first time through is decent enough. This is another plus-money bet, and I believe that his numbers are good enough to indicate more often than not, the first inning in this game will be clean. Kyle Gibson has the other end of this one, and he is a similar pitcher with a little less skill. The Blue Jays’ top-of-the-order is elite and much better than the rest of the lineup, but Gibson has the same wOBA allowed as Bassitt the first time through. His ability to limit walks makes him the type of pitcher I like to bet on in these, as he needs to allow multiple hits to be beaten.

Pick: +105
