MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds, Picks & Predictions: Monday (8/28)

As we hit the final week of August, there are officially five weeks of the MLB regular season remaining. We open this week with a nearly full schedule of 14 games on tap. Pay attention to lineups and injuries here are contending and non-contending teams will continue to take vastly different approaches to lineups this late in the season.

Monday’s Best No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Bets

New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers

When looking over pitching matchups, this certainly would not look like one we want to bet on. Tigers’ starter Reese Olson has an ERA over five, and his ERA is almost two runs better than Yankees’ starter Luis Severino. HRs have been an issue for Olson, who otherwise looks like a really interesting pitcher for the next few seasons. His 0.326 wOBA allowed the first time through does not stand out, but his strikeout upside and low walk rate make him intriguing enough for us to make this bet. The Yankees’ offense has been a bit better lately but is still not elite by any means. The Tigers’ offense has been struggling all season, and while Severino has been doing the same, he is coming off one of his best starts of the season. Severino has gotten absolutely crushed the first time through the order, but I anticipate him building off his last start and finishing the season strong.

Pick: +105

Texas Rangers at New York Mets

We are going with a full New York flavor to this article today, looking for both NYC teams to keep clean first frames. The Rangers’ offense has been elite all season, but the team has been struggling as a whole in the last few weeks. Their 97 wRC+ is certainly nowhere near the heights of their success in the first few months of the season. Mets’ starter Tylor Megill has struggled the first time through the order due to his walk issues, but with the Rangers’ offense struggling like this, I believe he can keep a clean frame. The Mets’ offense has quietly been really great lately, but Jon Gray is in the middle of a solid season. His 0.316 wOBA allowed the first time through the order is solid, although not spectacular. The Rangers are reeling, but a clean first frame could push them back into the win column.

Pick: +100
