MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds, Picks & Predictions: Monday (9/25)

On this final Monday of the MLB season, we have an extremely thin slate with only four games on the schedule. The first game starts at 1:05 as the Yankees and Diamondbacks make up their rainout from Saturday. The other three games, including a massive first game in the series between the Astros and the Mariners, all begin after 9 PM ET. Let’s take a look at the NRFI plays we have to choose from.

Monday's Best No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Bets

Houston Astros at Seattle Mariners

Usually on a thin slate like this, we have liked to take the games with longer odds that we can talk ourselves into, however, on this slate, those games are much tougher to find. So we will take the second-best pitching matchup of the day here, with Verlander and Castillo. Luis Castillo may finish as the AL CY Young runner-up and there is nothing really much that needs to be said about him. He is truly excellent and while the Mariners moved some interesting pieces to get him he has been worth every penny. Verlander has struggled the first time through the order (relative to career performance) but his numbers are not horrible and with the season on the line he has proven to be a big-game pitcher. The Mariners’ offense is solid but not exceptional and as a result, I expect him to throw a clean first frame.

Pick: No Runs First Inning (-125)

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels

The other two games come in at -145 and while it is likely justified in the Blake Snell/Logan Webb matchup, I cannot justify that cost in the Bronx. This game comes in at a more reasonable number and the pitchers back that number up. Patrick Sandoval will always remain one of the most frustrating pitchers in baseball with above-average talent that just always seems to have something go wrong. His main issue is just walking too many batters but that does not tend to kill him early. He has allowed a 0.289 wOBA the first time through the order and while the Rangers’ upper third of the order is elite I believe he can keep them from scoring. The Angels’ offense is in a much worse position than the Rangers due to injuries and while Gray does not really have excellent numbers the first time through the order we are betting against the offense more so than on him.

Pick: No Runs First Inning (-115)
