Thursday’s Best No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Bets

Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves

This is one of the only games on the board today with plus-money odds for the NRFI. This is mostly due to the Braves offense, which is undoubtedly the best in the league. However, Marcus Stroman takes the ball for Chicago, and this year, he has a solid 0.297 wOBA allowed the first time through the order. The task at hand is an extremely difficult one, but Stromam’s groundball approach should lead to good things in this one. The Braves are sending out AJ Smith-Shawver, and while he has had a bit of an up-and-down go of things in the majors this season, he actually has the same wOBA allowed as Stroman the first time through. The Cubs have a significantly less dangerous offense than the Braves, so he should be able to keep a clean first frame.

Pick: NRFI (+105)

Arizona Diamondbacks at Chicago White Sox

While this is not a game I love as much as I usually do, on this slate, it stands out among the crowd with the prices for some of the other games. The White Sox offense has struggled mightily this season and, with the loss of Luis Robert, is now even weaker than it was before. Bryce Jarvis is taking the mound for the DBacks in a likely opener scenario, and he has been excellent in the majors thus far. His surface numbers are far more impressive than the underlying ones, but he has been a multi-inning reliever, so hopefully, he can help translate some of that to the first frame. Touki Toussaint does not have an incredible first time through the order splits, but his 0.311 wOBA allowed is very respectable and shows that he can throw clean frames early in games. The DBacks have a solid offense, but definitely not one that should be scaring us off of any pitchers.

Pick: NRFI (-110)
