MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds, Picks & Predictions: Wednesday (9/20)

All 30 MLB teams are back in action today, but we are dialing back to just one No Runs First Inning (NRFI) bet. As the season has progressed and we’ve seen new players being called up, it’s been getting more difficult to handicap first innings. So, instead of giving you quantity, I am focusing on quality.

Here’s my best NRFI bet for today, Sept. 20.

New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins

Pitching Matchup: Kodai Senga vs. Eury Perez

The Miami Marlins needed a walk-off hit from Jake Burger last night to keep them in the Wild Card race. Miami is a half-game out from the third Wild Card.

Today, they send Eury Perez to the mound, who has shown impressive stuff since being called up this season.

Over his last four starts, he is 0-1 with a 3.54 ERA, while opponents are hitting .230 off him. Perez has yet to allow a first-inning run in his eight home starts. Perez has been dominant for the first time through a lineup. The first time through, opponents have only scored 10 runs while batting a lousy .179.

Mets’ starter Kodai Senga has found a groove. He is 11-7 with a 2.95 ERA in 2023, but he is 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA over his last four starts. The one knock on Senga is his command. The first time through the lineup tends to be a bit shaky for him, as he has allowed 34 walks and 22 runs. But, if he controls his split-finger and cutter, he can be lights out.

Senga’s 12.7% swing-and-miss rate is the fifth-highest among today’s starters, with his counterpart, Eury Perez, being the highest at 15.9%.

NRFI: -145
