MLB No Runs First Inning (NRFI) Odds & Picks: Thursday (Dodgers vs. Padres)

The Dodgers won the first game of the 2024 MLB season, taking down the Padres with some late-game scoring. The two teams will switch home and away tomorrow and play the last game of this early-season series.

Let’s take a look at the game from a No Runs First Inning (NRFI) viewpoint.

San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Starting Pitchers: Joe Musgrove vs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto

With only one game on the schedule, it’s a pleasant surprise that it comes in a -110 for the NRFI bet. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is making his MLB debut. The righty didn’t have the best Spring Training, showing some walk issues, but was just a victim of bad luck. One of my favorite “trends” in betting is taking advantage of pitchers who no one has faced before. The Padres may have some hitters who faced Yamamoto in the World Baseball Classic or watched him on film, but he has electric stuff and as a result, should be able to get through the lineup the first time cleanly.

Joe Musgrove similarly struggled in spring with similarly poor luck metrics. The top of the Dodgers’ lineup is great, so this is definitely not an easy matchup for him. He historically has a 0.293 wOBA allowed the first time through the order. That was slightly better in 2023, but still nothing groundbreaking. This line comes in at -110, likely more due to his side of the matchup than Yamamoto. Still, Musgrove is a veteran pitcher who likely won’t end up scared off by the spotlight.

Bet: NRFI (-110)
