Cleveland Guardians vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Logan Allen vs. Hyun Jin Ryu

The one Achilles heel of this Guardians team is scoring runs. In 2023, Cleveland scored a total of 512 runs. To put this in perspective, the Atlanta Braves have scored 729. Only the Detroit Tigers and Athletics have scored less.

 This offense is even worse against left-handed pitching. When facing an LHP, they rank 29th in wRC+ and dead last in wOBA, SLG%, and ISO. 

In August, they have a wRC+ of 39, which ranks dead last; again, even the historically bad Oakland A’s have a wRC+ of 81.

Hyun Jin Ryu has been great since returning to the Blue Jays. He allowed four earned runs in his first start against the Orioles, but since then has not allowed any earned runs. 

Guardians are sending out their own lefty, Logan Allen. Allen did well in his matchup against the Blue Jays earlier this month, pitching five innings and only giving up a solo home run to George Springer. Springer’s lead-off home run ended up being the only run of that game, and I expect today we will see a similar low-scoring game.

Houston Astros vs. Detroit Tigers

Hunter Brown vs. Eduardo Rodriguez

Eduardo Rodriguez has been pitching great at Comerica Park. He has a 4-2 record with a 2.79 ERA. Opposing offenses are batting a measly .217. He has only allowed a first-inning run in two of his eight home starts this season.

On the flipside, the Astros are starting Hunter Brown, who has pitched much better on the road. Away from Minute Maid Park, Brown is 6-4 with a 3.86 ERA.

Brown may have some extra motivation this afternoon as he is a suburban Detroit native, so one must think many friends and family members will be attending. 

The NRFI has cashed in 70% of Hunter Brown’s starts and a 62% hit rate when he is on the road.
