Washington Nationals vs. Seattle Mariners

Pitching matchup: Patrick Corbin vs. Logan Gilbert

Well, well, well, look at what we have here! Fade Patrick Corbin Day!

Not only do we get to fade Corbin, but we can also fade Logan Gilbert. Gilbert has not been as bad as Corbin but has had a drop-off since last season. Gilbert had a breakout year in 2022, going 13-6 with a 3.20 ERA and 174 strikeouts. This year he has taken a step backward; he is 5-4 with a 4.07 ERA. That ERA may not tell the entire story since his xERA and xFIP are closer to 3.60.

But today, we are looking at the first inning. Gilbert has allowed 15 first-inning runs while allowing a run in the first inning in three of his six home starts and nine of his 15 overall starts of the 2023 season.

As for Corbin, we all know who and what he is. Corbin has allowed 13 first-inning runs, the ninth most in the entire MLB. He has been even worse on the road. He is 2-4 in seven road starts with a 6.34 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Baltimore Orioles

Pitching matchup: Luke Weaver vs. Kyle Gibson

While it’s fun to partake in “Fade Patrick Corbin Day,” it’s time that we start considering fading Luke Weaver on a weekly basis.

The Reds’ starter has an ERA of 6.86, which is the fourth-worst in the MLB among starters with at least 60 IP. His xFIP of 4.68 is higher than Corbin’s, and his xERA of 5.36 is just shy of Corbin’s 6.42.

Weaver’s first-inning stats are just as ugly. He has the highest opponent batting average (.424), second-highest OBP (.470) and third-highest SLG% (.712). His 19 first-inning runs allowed are tied for the most in the MLB.

While Kyle Gibson leads the O’s in wins,  he hasn’t been elite. He is 8-5 with a 4.40 ERA. His advanced metrics also back that up, as his 4.92 xERA and 4.48 xFIP are below the average MLB pitcher.

Both teams rank in the top 11 of wRC+ and should be able to push across at least one run in the first inning.

Bet: YRFI (-135)
