Thursday’s MLB Best Bets

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

Arizona Diamondbacks (-120) @ New York Mets (+100) | O/U 7.5 (+102/-122)

It’s been a disappointment for the reigning National League Champions. The team is currently in fourth place in the NL West, and they’ve dropped four of their last five. That includes losing a series to the Marlins and getting swept by their opponent from last year’s World Series, the Texas Rangers. One of their bright spots is Zac Gallen on the mound. After two mediocre outings at the end of April, May has been a better month, with fourth straight quality starts, a 2.81 ERA, and a 2.19 FIP.

The Mets tried to buy their way to a championship with the highest payroll, but it has brought mediocre results. They are in fourth place, 11 games below .500, and 4-15 over their last 19. The offense is batting just .213, the pitching has a 4.66 ERA in that span, and the actions of Jorge Lopez summarize the frustrations in Flushing. The beginning of the career for the Mets’ third-best prospect, Christian Scott, is going as well as he could hope. With his exceptional movement on his fastball and slider, he’s getting batters hitting weak ground balls.

The Diamondbacks are third in the league in groundball percentage, so this is a benefit for Scott, but Gallen should get another great start against a bad Mets offense.

Pick: Under 7.5 (-122)

New York Yankees (-180) @ Los Angeles Angels (+150) | O/U 8.5 (-108/-112)

The Yankees were able to grab the win on Wednesday to even out this series and force a rubber game. The Yankees are on a stellar run, winning 12 of their last 16, and Aaron Judge is on one of the hottest streaks of his career. Anthony Volpe’s 21-game hitting streak is the second-longest by a Yankees player aged 23 or younger, and he has a chance to tie that record with Joe DiMaggio tonight. Carlos Rodon’s first year with the Yankees was filled with lousy pitching and injuries, but he’s having a fantastic second year, winning four straight starts with a 1.85 ERA in that span.

The Angels are going nowhere in the American League West. Even without Mike Trout, they’re still a solid offense, ranking 10th in slugging and 11th in batting average. The pitching has surprisingly only given up five runs to this Yankees offense, but their 4.61 ERA is 28th. Patrick Sandoval has been brutal this year and is coming off his worst start, allowing eight earned, four walks, and three home runs to the Guardians.

Both games have been settled by one run, but with the Yankees’ large advantage in the pitching matchup, they should win this by multiple runs.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 (-105)
