Tuesday's Best MLB Picks
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Philadelphia Phillies (-112) at New York Mets (-108) | O/U 7 (-118/-102)
The Phillies were close to allowing the Mets to get the late heroics again, but Nick Castellanos' walkoff hit tied this series at one.
As they head to Queens, they have to score early and take the momentum away from the home crowd. After scoring one run in the first in Game 1, they were blanked until they scored one in the ninth. In Game 2, they didn't score until the sixth. This team has that ability to score early, as they were sixth in the regular season in the first five runs scored per game.
Aaron Nola is one of their best pitchers. His last start against New York didn't go well, as he allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings, but he does have a complete-game shutout against them this year.
The Mets have not played at home since September 22, so fans haven't seen them since clinching a playoff spot and winning the Wild Card Round. We know that in Philadelphia, the fans can be loud; they have to match that energy.
With all of their clutch performances, we could see those sparks: The comeback in Game 1 of the doubleheader against Atlanta, then Game 3 against Milwaukee, Game 1 against Philadelphia and almost again in Game 2. Do not count out this team until all 27 outs are recorded.
Sean Manaea last faced the Phillies on September 21. He went seven innings and allowed three earned runs, but he did give up two home runs in that start.
This will be a tight game, but the Phillies just need to shake the rust off, which they have, and they should be in line to set up an elimination game.
Pick: Phillies Moneyline (-112)
Los Angeles Dodgers (+130) at San Diego Padres (-155) | O/U 7.5 (-115/-105)
After the Dodgers won an exciting Game 1, the Padres responded in a big way in Game 2. San Diego got started with Fernando Tatis Jr. and David Peralta home runs in the first two innings. This game was close for most of the time. The Padres broke it up with six more runs in the final two innings for the win.
San Diego has power and they showed it with six home runs in Game 2. Machado had one in Game 1, while Tatis Jr. smashed two in Game 2. Those are your two best bats; if they stay hot, it sets the tone for this lineup.
Michael King was part of the Juan Soto deal and immediately impacted this rotation. He got the playoff run going by shutting down the Braves with seven scoreless innings and 12 strikeouts.
The Dodgers had fantastic offensive moments in Game 1 but were quiet in Game 2. This is a lineup where there's no easy out, but we know the top of the lineup is where they are most dangerous. Leaving Shohei Ohtani at leadoff has been a great decision, but between him, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez, they went 1-for-13 in Game 2. When you keep them quiet, you're in a great position to win.
After a rough start back from the injured list (IL), Walker Buehler was better in his final three starts with a 3.31 ERA, which includes a win over San Diego.
San Diego has the better pitching matchup and this could be another close game that could have drama late, but San Diego will hold the early lead at home.
Pick: Padres F5 -0.5 (-110)
