Tuesday's Best MLB Picks
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
New York Yankees (-142) at Kansas City Royals (+120) | O/U 9 (-120/+100)
After dropping back-to-back games to the Dodgers, the Yankees are back on the winning side. This now puts them with the most wins with 47, and the second-best winning percentage in the league. The offense alone could drive this team as they are second in runs scored, OBP, and SLG. They have an even better pitching staff that leads the league ERA, WHIP, and opponent's batting average. Marcus Stroman is coming off his worst start of the season, allowing five earned against the Twins, but the Yankees bats carried the team to an 8-5 win.
We must ask if the hot start to Kansas City's season was the real deal. As we see more tape on them, they are beginning to struggle. They are 5-9 in their last 14 games, and the pitching has regressed, with a 5.18 ERA in that span. Brady Singer could also be due for a regression; he has excellent surface numbers but has trouble forcing swings and misses, and specific numbers like the opponent's barrel contact, line drive, and pull percentage are worse than last season when he had a 5.52 ERA.
That's against a Yankee lineup with the best barrel percentage and 11th-best line drive percentage. This could be another game where Stroman doesn't have to be brilliant and let the offense support him.
Pick: Yankees Moneyline (-142)
Pittsburgh Pirates (-130) at St. Louis Cardinals (+110) | O/U 7.5 (-108/-112)
There isn't much to be excited about this year in Pittsburgh. The team is currently in last place, but they have won two straight series against the Twins and Dodgers. The offense is a bottom tier, sitting in the bottom ten in average and slugging, and altogether, a severe lack of pop with no one having double-digit home runs. Pirates fans look forward to every fifth day when Paul Skenes takes the mound. The former first-overall pick has been sensational to start his career with a 35.5% strikeout rate, and his whiff rate, fastball velocity, expected ERA, and off-speed run value are all in the 85th percentile or better.
The Cardinals have had their moment where they may look like a contender more recently when they won eight of ten, and were climbing back into contention. They immediately hit another skid and are 4-6 in their last ten. The offense has been horrendous; Paul Goldschmidt is hitting .229 with a .656 OPS, and Nolan Arenado is batting .252 with a -0.2 WAR. When the guys you depend on to help carry the lineup can't produce, it impacts everyone else. Miles Mikolas has two All-Star appearances in nine MLB seasons, but do not look for one this year as he comes in with a 5.32 ERA. However, he has been better recently with quality starts in three of his last four outings and pitching to a 3.72 ERA.
Skenes will carry this team against an awful lineup. The Pirates wonât need much offense to win, but they should put up some runs against a below-average pitcher.
Pick: Pirates Moneyline (-130)
