(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Shane McClanahan to record a win vs. Cubs (+100)
Shane McClanahan is the only pitcher in baseball with eight wins and is one of two pitchers with at least six wins that is also undefeated. McClanahan has shown some vulnerability on the road, with a 3.00 ERA and 1.44 WHIP compared to a 1.22 ERA and 0.89 WHIP at home. However, we expect the Tampa Bay Rays offense to be so successful that it should not matter, even if McClanahan does not have his best stuff.
Chicago Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks allowed a .333 OBA in his first start and recorded three times as many flyouts as ground ball outs, a dangerous way to live against the Rays lineup. And if Hendricks again does not give the team length (he was removed after 4 1/3 innings in his first start), the Rays should beat up a Cubs bullpen with the worst ERA (4.65) of any National League team.
At one point last season, McClanahan had six consecutive outings of 6+ IP and five or fewer baserunners allowed, and his HR/9 rate this year is even better than what he finished last yearâs All-Star campaign with. So while McClanahan has a troubling 9.7% walk rate, the Chicago Cubs tend to be a more free-swinging team against left-handed starting pitchers, ranking seventh in walk rate against southpaws but third overall. Again, McClanahan does not have to be at his best to cash this wager, as we expect the Rays to score at least five runs today.
Ketel Marte Over 2.5 hits + runs + RBIs (+115)
The Arizona Diamondbacks are in an offensive slump, scoring four or fewer runs in four of their last six games. However, the perfect remedy is a meeting with the Colorado Rockies, whose startersâ ERA and FIP rank 28th and 29th, respectively.
Though todayâs starter, Kyle Freeland, has limited the damage with two or fewer earned runs allowed in four of his last five starts, he has allowed seven or more hits in three of four, which suggests regression from a runs standpoint is coming. Ketel Marte is slashing .324/.439/.529 in 34 career at-bats against Freeland, and five of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases. Moreover, Marte is in his better-hitting split, as he entered Monday batting 15 points higher and slugging 44 points better against lefties than righties this year. And given that he has cashed the Over 1.5 H/R/RBIs prop in eight of the last 11 games, we are getting great value for him to do so at a slightly higher number.
Shohei Ohtani Over 0.5 RBIs vs. White Sox (+155)
Shohei Ohtaniâs 12 home runs are still tied for the team lead despite him hitting just one in the last eight games. However, Ohtani has homered in two of his last five road games and faces a pitcher on pace for the worst GB/FB ratio of his career.
Chicago White Sox starter Lucas Giolito has allowed a fly-ball rate of 29.8%, which is on pace to rise for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, his 9.1 K/9 rate is on pace to be his lowest of the previous four seasons.
Giolito has allowed at least one home run in five consecutive starts, and the wind favors the hitters, given the high total of 9.5 runs. We are getting decent value on this wager, considering he hits behind Mike Trout, who is just 2-for-11 with five strikeouts in his career against Giolito.
The Angels are 4-0 in Tyler Andersonâs last four starts, scoring at least five runs in each. And the Over has cashed in each of Chicagoâs last five games, making us confident that Ohtani will do his part to ensure runs are scored.
