Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs

The Pirates have controlled the start of this series by winning the first two games. The starting pitching has been phenomenal, including Paul Skenes, who went six no-hit innings and struck out 11 on Friday. Bailey Falter had a couple of bad starts that elevated his ERA, but in six of nine outings, he’s gone at least five innings and allowed three or fewer earned runs.

The Cubs are in jeopardy of losing their second straight series after taking two of three against the Pirates last week. The offense has been brutal over the last few games, batting just .212 with a 25.9% strikeout rate. Shota Imanaga has been as great as advertised, and he could legitimately win both the National League Rookie of the Year and Cy Young. He’s leading the league with a 0.96 ERA and has three starts where he allowed no runs and at least seven strikeouts.

If anyone can stop the momentum of the Pirates, it’s Imanaga.

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees

The Yankees are hot once again as they come in winning five straight and 11 of their last 13. The offense has been one of the best in recent weeks, as they are leading the league with a .830 OPS, .480 SLG, and .281 AVG since May 3. Luis Gil gets the ball in what’s been his breakout season as he is finally healthy and coming in with three straight quality starts while touting a 0.49 ERA and opponents hitting just .100 against him.

The White Sox are bad, but they might not be as bad historically as predicted earlier in the season. They’ve won six of their last nine and are second with a 2.13 ERA since May 8th. Brad Keller’s tenure in Chicago is going well. He’s getting the same opportunities of switching back and forth from the bullpen and getting occasional starts. He has a 2.84 ERA through 12 innings this season.

It’s a small sample size (18 AB), but the Yankees are batting .407 with a .667 SLG and a 22% walk rate. This lineup is at the top in all of those categories.
