Philadelphia Phillies @ Cincinnati Reds

The Phillies will start Cristopher Sanchez against the Reds. He’s a left-handed pitcher who has added 27.2% of strikeouts to begin the season. Better yet, he’s facing a Reds lineup that has struck out 25.3% of the time against lefties since last season. Cincinnati’s projected lineup for today has six targets who have struck out at least 22.8% of the time against lefties. However, the lineup has also hit just a .136 ISO and wOBA of .304 against lefties since last year. Sanchez has the potential and ability to get through six innings tonight.

On the other hand, Andrew Abbott will get the call for the Reds. He’s also a lefty, but he’s struggled way more against righties since coming into the league. This season, he’s given up a .242 ISO and wOAB of .323 to his first 73 righties. Last year, he allowed a .205 ISO and wOBA of .350 to 373 righties.

That said, we’ll want to back some righties in the Phillies lineup. Since last season, Alec Bohm has slugged a .290 ISO and wOBA of .400 with only 15.2% of strikeouts against lefties. Meanwhile, J.T. Realmuto has smacked a .242 ISO and wOBA of .352 against his last 175 lefties faced.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ Washington Nationals

The Nationals will pitch left-hander Patrick Corbin in tonight’s series opener against the Dodgers. Corbin has notoriously struggled against righties over the last couple of seasons. Last year, he allowed a .198 ISO and wOBA of .367 with only 15.4% of strikeouts. This year, it’s more of the same. Corbin has allowed a .203 ISO and wOBA of .410 with only 12.7% of strikeouts against righties.

We’ll stack the righties from the Los Angeles order.

Since last season, Mookie Betts has smashed a .344 ISO and wOBA of .449 with only 12.5% strikeouts against lefties. With those numbers, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a multi-hit game. Meanwhile, Will Smith has slugged a .199 ISO and wOBA of .369 with only 13.6% of strikeouts. He’s expected to hit some hard contact against Corbin.

Finally, Teoscar Hernandez has hit a .231 ISO and wOAB of .348. His strikeout rate might be a bit high against lefties, but Corbin isn’t much of a strikeout threat. That favors Hernandez, especially when he puts the ball in play.

After all, the righties in the Dodgers’ lineup have hit only 31% of ground balls against lefties while hitting 29.2% of fly balls and 34.1% of line drives. Those righties should have a field day tonight.
