Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees
- Leg 1: Yankees -1.5 (+110)
- Leg 2: Gerrit Cole Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-125)
- Leg 3: Juan Soto 1+ RBI (+175)
The Yankees had a shaky season. Their early-year domination kept them afloat when they hit a big skid during the mid-months.
The biggest problem was the pitching. They had one of the best staffs and led in ERA early with starters eating up innings and a shut-down bullpen. That changed. We saw injuries, struggles, a demotion for a certain starter and a closer who couldn't close. We know pitching plays a large part in October, and if they can't revert to early-season form, this could be a quick exit.
Gerrit Cole goes for the Yankees. The reigning American League Cy Young winner won't win the award this year but had another solid season with a 3.41 ERA. He didn't face the Royals this season, but this lineup is batting .221 lifetime against him. Cole has a stellar 33.1% strikeout rate.
The Royals continue to shock the league. No one thought last year's American League Central last-place finisher would make it into the playoffs, let alone win a series.
The team made tremendous strides that led to this position, going from 23rd last year to 13th in runs scored and from 28th to eighth in ERA.
The biggest star to come out of it was Bobby Witt. He put up MVP-like numbers this season and is the American League batting champion. Now, with his appearance in the playoffs, this small-market player will be on the big stage.
Michael Wacha has played for five teams in five seasons, but maybe the Royals would consider retaining him after a fantastic 2024 with 13 wins and a 3.35 ERA. You can take out Anthony Rizzo's .393 average because he's out due to an injury, leaving only Alex Verdugo batting above .240 against Wacha.
Yankees bats might start slow with the time off, but Cole should give them a good enough performance where he'll push them to win.
Parlay Odds: +940
San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers
- Leg 1: Over 7.5 Runs (-115)
- Leg 2: Shohei Ohtani 2+ Total Bases (+100)
- Leg 3: Dodgers Over 3.5 Runs (-140)
The great thing about this playoff format is that we get to see division rivals face each other in the playoffs. We know the Dodgers and Padres despise each other, and this could be a heated series.
The Padres were among the hottest teams in the second half, leading them to win the top Wild Card spot. The offense led the way, as they were second in batting average (.267) and third in slugging (.439) in the second half.
The pitching wasn't terrible either, as their 3.38 ERA in that span was fourth. Unfortunately, they won't have Joe Musgrove for the playoffs and possibly next year, as he requires Tommy John surgery. Dylan Cease will get the start today. He's had one good and one bad start against the Dodgers. That bad one came in his last start of the season when he allowed three earned runs and three walks in a loss.
There were times the Dodgers almost gave up their National League West lead to the red-hot Padres and Diamondbacks, but they were always able to play well at the right time. The offense is one of the best in the playoffs when you have Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, but baseball fans are notably excited to see Shohei Ohtani in his playoff debut.
Their pitching has been their weakness all season, and it has to do with injuries in their rotation. They never had their anticipated rotation and won't have Tyler Glasnow or Clayton Kershaw. Yoshinobu Yamamoto missed nearly four months due to injury. He has four starts since his return, but he hasn't gone past the fifth inning.
Both teams will be ready for this stage. Itâs tough to pick a winner, but we will see some scoring.
Parlay Odds: +541
