Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

It just keeps getting worse for the Yankees. They were on their way to snapping a three-game losing streak on Friday night, but Clay Holmes blew the save by allowing two runs in the ninth. The Red Sox would grab two more in the 10th to win the series opener.

New York didn’t necessarily deserve to win that game; two groundouts and a walk scored their three runs. The pitching hasn’t helped them; since June 16, the bullpen’s 5.42 ERA is 27th, and the starters have a league-worse 7.76 ERA.

Gerrit Cole’s ERA looks terrible because of one of his three starts, in which he allowed six earned runs to the Orioles. He’s had two good outings. Hopefully, he can help this team, which is playing at its worst.

The Red Sox look like they’ve turned things around over the last few weeks. On June 12, the American League East looked out of reach as they sat 14 games behind, but they are 15-5 since and have cut that deficit in half.

The pitching has been efficient as their 3.91 ERA in that span is 10th and their K/9 is 11th. Although it’s the offense that carries this team, they’re leading in batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and batting average, their on-base percentage (OBP) is second and they have scored the fifth-most runs. They may not continue at this pace, but if they make some moves and stay near this pace, they will be a playoff-caliber team.

Josh Winckowski has been getting spot starts throughout the year, and each time, he’s delivered with a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 innings as a starter.

Look for a high-scoring game as these two teams usually trend that way.

    Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins

The Astros are one of the hottest teams in baseball as they get back into playoff contention. They have won 12 of their last 14, and as the Mariners play at their worst, Houston has shrunk their deficit from nine games to two. Their pitching has struggled all season, but it has completely flipped as their 3.05 ERA during this 14-game span is second.

It only needs to be slightly better when they have that lineup. They have been on an unbelievable stretch as they lead in runs, average, OBP, slugging percentage and BABIP. Hunter Brown is one of those pitchers who has turned around his season. In his first nine starts, he was 1-5 with a 7.71 ERA, but since then, he’s 5-1 with a 1.29 ERA.

The Twins have been a streaky team throughout the season, with a 12-game winning streak and a seven-game losing streak.

Last year, the pitching supported an offense that struggled; this year, it has flipped. They are ninth in batting average and OBP, while the ERA is 20th.

Joe Ryan has been their best pitcher, leading the rotation in ERA, WHIP and hits allowed per nine. Unfortunately, the Twins are only 9-8 in his starts.

While this good pitching matchup could lead to a slow start to this game, both bullpens are awful, and the offense should kick up later.
