Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox

The American League Central belongs to the Guardians, but three other teams remain playoff contenders.

The Twins are tied with the Tigers for the third Wild Card spot. They've hit a slide at the wrong time, dropping 11 of their last 16, which included being swept by Kansas City.

You can't solely blame either side because the offense and pitching have been bad. Since September 3, they are 23rd in ERA (4.41) and 28th in wOBA (.277).

The only pitcher Minnesota has been able to depend on recently is Pablo Lopez. He had an awful start to the season but has been rolling the last few starts; he's 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA in his previous five.

This is a make-or-break weekend for the Red Sox. Winning the series against Minnesota could put them in a great position to steal a Wild Card spot in the last week. After losing in extra innings on Friday, they need the next two.

They are coming off a brutal road trip, going 2-5 against the Yankees and Rays, which has put them in this position. Lack of consistency in the pitching and offense was their problem and has been for most of the year. Neither had been hot at the same time, and that's why they could never seriously contend.

It's another disappointing year for Kutter Crawford, who has a 4.19 ERA and an MLB-worst 15 losses. He's lost six straight starts, and while the 4.28 ERA isn't good, it isn't bad enough to lose that many in a row.

The pitching matchup highly favors the Twins, which could close the book on Boston’s season.

Detroit Tigers at Baltimore Orioles

Detroit got back into contention thanks to a recent four-game winning streak, which included a sweep of the Royals. No one would have guessed they would be in this situation, especially after being sellers at the deadline.

They are 25-11 in their last 36 games, and although they traded an excellent pitcher in Jack Flaherty, they remain the best pitching staff with an MLB-leading 2.50 ERA in that time.

Reese Olson returned from the IL just in time for this playoff run. He's hoping he'll perform better than last time when he only went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs.

This is another tough opponent, as Baltimore is one of the best power-hitting lineups. They are coming into this game, leading the league with a 3.8 home run rate and fifth with a .747 OPS.

The Orioles are on a slide, going 4-7 in their last 11. The American League East might be out of the picture, but they are five games up in the Wild Card and three out of first place.

Rookie Cade Povich is one of Baltimore's top prospects, but he's having a tough rookie season and has lost his last two starts with a 5.59 ERA.
