New York Yankees at San Diego Padres

The Yankees have dominated the first two games of this series and will try to complete the sweep. This has been the best pitching staff in the league, and they are the only ones with a sub-3.00 ERA. The starters have gone 13 straight games, going at least five innings and allowing three or fewer runs. Clarke Schmidt has been on that type of run all season, allowing three or fewer runs and pitching into the fifth in all ten starts.
The Padres offense has flopped in this series, scoring one run. A lot of it has to do with the level of pitching they’ve faced, not having Xander Bogaerts might also play a factor, but this is still a lineup that is top ten in runs, batting average, and on-base percentage. Joe Musgrove had a short but effective first outing since coming off an injury by going three innings and allowing one earned.
Musgrove has struggled with walks all season; his 3.1 walks per nine is his worst since 2020. The Yankees are second in walk rate, and with both the pitching and hitters playing well, this should complete the sweep.

It has been a tough weekend for the Braves, as they are on the verge of being swept for the second time this season. On Friday, they went with a bullpen day, and it was a disaster from the start as opener Ray Kerr allowed five runs; Saturday, the offense could not come through in the clutch as they left nine runners on base. Chris Sale will try to help salvage the final game. The lefty’s fresh start with the Braves has been great, and he has not allowed a run in his last three starts (20 IP).
The Pirates have been highly inconsistent all season. This is the same team that has lost six and four games straight on separate occasions, but it won a series against Baltimore and can sweep today. Martin Perez is on a brutal run at the moment, with a 9.42 ERA, and opponents have a .727 SLG and 1.127 OPS in his last three.
The Braves’ bats need a matchup like this to get back on the right track.
