New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins will roll with Cal Quantrill tonight. The right-hander struggled last season with the Rockies, earning only 16.5% of strikeouts against 659 batters. In addition, he struck out 16.7% of lefties and walked them 12.8% of the time. He also allowed a .189 ISO and wOBA of .361 to lefties while giving up 30% of line drives and 49.3% of hard contact.

Quantrill will likely fall behind many left-handed batters. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto will be in good hitting counts.

Soto launched a .291 ISO and wOBA of .432 with only 18.8% of strikeouts against righties last season. Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor smacked a .206 ISO and wOBA of .364 against 524 righties last season. Both hit fly balls more than 28% of the time against righties. Each hit at least 59% of hard contact with an above-average barrel percentage.

On the other hand, the Mets will throw David Peterson. The lefty Peterson only struck out 19.2% of batters, including just 16.4% of righties. The Marlins figure to have a lineup of at least eight righties in the lineup. Those eight righties have only struck out 20.4% of the time. Peterson should force many ground balls and keep fly balls to a minimum, but a high strikeout rate likely isn’t in the cards.

Washington Nationals vs. Toronto Blue Jays

The Washington Nationals will send out Michael Soroka for his first start with his new ball club. Soroka was below average with the Chicago White Sox last season. He struck out 24.1% of batters but also walked 12.4%, allowing a .190 ISO and wOBA of .326 to 348 batters.

Meanwhile, Soroka will have to face a Blue Jays lineup that struck out only 13.3% of the time against righties last season. There’s not a single player in the Blue Jays lineup who struck out more than 19.5% of the time against righties. Soroka is set to face a very aggressive Blue Jays lineup.

Anthony Santander is a new addition to the Blue Jays. Last season with the Orioles, Santander hit a .272 ISO and wOBA of .355 against righties, striking out only 17.7% of the time. He’s in line for a big night.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smashed a .219 ISO and wOBA of .403 with only 14.8% of strikeouts against righties last season. Guerrero hit over 29% of line drives and 58.6% of hard contact against righties. Like Santander, Guerrero looks great on paper tonight.
