MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions: Monday (10/9)

October baseball is as good as it gets, although it is a much different game, particularly for starting pitchers. Be wary of the enticing short lines the books offer for some of these stud starters. The leashes are short, and the hooks are quick in this playoff environment.

That said, here are the best Sleeper plays worth considering for today, Monday, Oct. 9.

Monday’s Best MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions

This season: 75-62-9

Bobby Miller Under 5.5 Strikeouts

As stated in the intro, starters hit the bench quickly in the playoffs. Take a look at this article for more details on the regular season and playoff differences. The Dodgers will send out rookie right-hander Bobby Miller in Game 2. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him out of the game after four innings or so, especially with the way Dave Roberts handles his starters.

Miller faced the Diamondbacks on two occasions this season. He managed to go six innings in both starts but only struck out four on each occasion. Starters lacking in strikeouts is a regular occurrence against Arizona, who had the fifth-lowest K% (20.7%) against righties on the season. In fact, the last 13 right-handed starters to face them have failed to eclipse this mark. Take the under here.

Nick Castellanos Over 0.5 Hits

The Phillies starting right-fielder has made a living hitting against Southpaws. Nick Castellanos has a career .304 batting average and 133 wRC+ against lefties, compared to a 104 wRC+ and .267 batting average against right-handed pitching.

Tonight, he and the Phillies take on the Braves left-handed Max Fried. Apparently, the baseball looks like a beachball when Fried throws to Castellanos because he is 8-13 with a double and a homer against him. Back him to record a hit tonight.

Zac Gallen Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed

The Diamondbacks ace has not been the same away from Chase Field this season. He’s had a 4.42 ERA (4.26 xFIP) and .313 wOBA in 108 innings on the road this season. At home, it’s a 2.47 ERA (2.66 xFIP) and .262 wOBA. Those are pretty stark splits that need to be leaned into for this occasion.

The Dodgers are in a must-win spot at home and need to come out firing to give their rookie some run support early on. Zac Gallen got rocked in both of his two starts against the Dodgers this season. Both took place at Chavez Ravine. He allowed six hits and five earned runs in just 4.2 innings on Opening Day and nine hits and six earned runs across 5.1 innings on Aug. 28.
