MLB World Series Same Game Parlay: Friday (Dodgers vs. Yankees)

The 2024 World Series begins on Friday and pits two of the league's most storied franchises against one another. The Los Angeles Dodgers host the New York Yankees in Game 1 on Friday night.

I am playing a Same Game Parlay (SGP) for this game based on some recent trends involving both teams.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Dodgers

My SGP begins with a slight fade of both starting pitchers. I am taking both Jack Flaherty and Gerrit Cole to record fewer than 5.5 strikeouts on Friday.

Jack Flaherty has only struck out a total of eight out of the 67 hitters (12 percent) her has faced in three postseason starts. He did strike out six in one of those three, but he has struggled mightily in recent weeks overall. Flaherty has also had trouble striking out the hitters he will face on Friday. Yankee hitters that will start on Friday have collectively struck out in just seven of 52 career plate appearances versus Flaherty.

Gerrit Cole has had a bit more historical success against his Friday opponent in the strikeout department. Los Angeles' expected starting lineup has struck out in 30-of-126 career plate appearances against Cole. However, the Yankees’ ace has not striking out hitters at a high rate in recent weeks. Cole has exactly four strikeouts in each of his three playoff starts and he also struck out five or fewer in two of his final three regular-season outings. The Dodgers are excellent at working deep counts and avoiding strikeouts, so I am taking the Under on 5.5 for Cole as well.

Gleyber Torres has been a catalyst for the Yankees ever since grabbing a hold of the leadoff spot late in the regular season. That has continued during the playoffs. Torres has 10 hits in his last six games. He has drawn seven walks in the postseason, which is not ideal for this leg. However, with Juan Soto and Aaron Judge looming, I am trusting Flaherty to attack Torres in the strike zone. I expect Torres to register at least one hit on Friday.

The final leg of this SGP is for Dodgers' outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to go Under his 1.5 Total Base prop. I always feel uneasy fading Hernandez, but I think it is justified in this instance.

Hernandez is just 8-for-40 in the postseason and did not record an extra-base hit during the NLCS. He has also struggled against Cole in their head-to-head matchups. The Yankee right-hander has held Hernandez to a career 5-for-26 mark. Hernandez does have a double and a home run against Cole, but I expect Cole to continue to get the better of this matchup on Friday.
