Monday Night Football Odds, Picks & Predictions: Bears vs. Patriots (Week 7)

Two great NFL franchises will go at it Monday night in Foxboro, as the 2-4 Bears head east to take on the 3-3 Patriots. For the Patriots, while the AFC East likely belongs to the 5-1 Bills, the AFC Wildcard spot is still very much in play as a win here would put them directly in the mix. As for the Bears, we are already getting into the must-win territory, as they currently sit 13th in the NFC as the season approaches the halfway point.

Let’s take a look at how this one might play out on Monday night.

NFL Week 7 Monday Night Football Odds, Picks & Predictions (Bears vs. Patriots)

(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)

Details

  • Opening Line: Patriots -7 | O/U 38.5
  • Current Line: Patriots -8 | O/U 40.5
  • Last meeting: October 21, 2018 – Patriots 38, Bears 31

Overview

While Baily Zappe’s days as the starter in New England are over for now with the return of Mac Jones, the Patriots can thank the Western Kentucky alum for pulling them back to .500 on the season.  Following the loss to Green Bay in OT in Week 4, Zappe took over for Brian Hoyer and has since completed 51 of 70 passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception while guiding his team to victories against Detroit and Cleveland.

After winning two of its first three games, Chicago has dropped three straight games, each by a margin of one possession. The Bears haven’t played since losing to Washington at home on Thursday night last week by a score of 12-7.

The Bears will try to compensate for two obvious shortcomings in their games. Starting on defense, the Bears are the NFL’s 29th- and 24th-ranked defense, allowing 163 running yards and 4.8 yards per attempt per game, respectively. Through 115 pass attempts, second-year quarterback Justin Fields has been sacked 23 times on offense. Running the ball is still an asset for the Bears, however, as  Fields (5.2 yards per run) adds to the Bears’ second-ranked ground game, which averages 170.8 yards and is led by Khalil Herbert and David Montgomery.

Bottom Line

The Patriots are coming in off one of their strongest defensive performances of the season against Cleveland, in which they held the Browns to just 70 rushing yards, which is more than 100 fewer than the team’s season average. That is just one week removed from holding the Lions to zero points on the day.

With a 10-3 record overall and a five-game winning run over Chicago, New England has dominated this series which I expect to continue this week.

Pick: Patriots -8
