Monday Night Football Odds, Picks & Predictions: Broncos vs. Chargers (Week 6)

Two franchises seemingly headed in opposite directions will meet Monday night in Los Angeles, as the 2-3 Broncos travel west to take on the 3-2 Chargers. For Russell Wilson, he is still in search of his first road win as a Bronco, as his start thus far has been less than ideal in every way.  On the other side of this matchup, the Chargers’ young quarterback Justin Herbert continues to battle back from a rib injury suffered earlier in the season.

Let’s take a closer look at both teams and how this one might play out at SoFi Stadium.

Details

  • Opening Line: Chargers -6.5 | O/U 47.5
  • Current Line: Chargers -4.5 | O/U 46
  • Last meeting: January 2, 2022 – Broncos 13, Chargers 34

Overview

The Chargers have recovered from a string of losses, including one in which the Jacksonville Jaguars thoroughly outplayed them. The most recent was a terrific 30-28 performance last week against the Cleveland Browns on the road. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was an efficient 22 of 34 for 228 yards and a touchdown despite battling rib cartilage damage. The game’s real MVP, however, was Los Angeles running back Austin Ekeler, who sparked the team’s sluggish rushing attack.

The Chargers had an NFL-worst average of 64.5 running yards per game going into last week. All of that changed when Ekeler ran for a career-high 173 yards and two touchdowns—one rushing and one receiving—while Los Angeles gained a total of 238 yards on the ground. The group had not scored more in a game since 2018. The Chargers, who currently average 99.2 yards per game, have seemingly turned a corner on the ground.

As for the Broncos, after their 12-9 loss to the Indianapolis Colts last Thursday, things appear to be as bad as many thought they were as new quarterback Russell Wilson has not been the hero Denver was hoping for.

Despite a partially torn right lat that recently required an injection, Wilson is anticipated to play Monday as the Broncos look to take advantage of a 10-day break in between games. Quinn Meinerz, a guard for Denver, was one of 12 limited practice participants due to a hamstring injury, but he is expected to play. Former Charger running back Melvin Gordon III (neck, ribs) was also limited.

Bottom Line

One major reason for optimism this week for the Chargers is the return of All-Pro receiver Keenan Allen back to practice. Already averaging 291.2 yards per game through the air, the return of Allen should spark even more production.

Pick: Chargers -4.5
