Dallas Cowboys @ Los Angeles Chargers

Even without cornerback Trevon Diggs, the Cowboys’ defense and secondary remain one of the best in the league. Yeah, they gave up 42 points last week to the San Francisco 49ers, but that is more of a proclamation of how good Kyle Shanahan’s offense is rather than an indictment on Dallas’ defense.

The 49ers also scored two late meaningless touchdowns when the game was already decided. Prior to last week, the Cowboys were allowing just 10.3 points per game. Entering this matchup, they rank sixth in the league in expected points contributed by passing defense and 10th in expected points contributed by rushing defense. Their defense will continue to need to dominate because the offense is a major question mark.

San Francisco’s defense last week helped expose a Cowboys passing attack that leaves a lot to be desired, and now uncomfortable questions may need to be had regarding Dak Prescott and if he can truly be the guy. What makes matters worse is that his contract makes him both immovable and basically un-benchable, and I am not sure he will dice up an equally questionable Chargers secondary.

Los Angeles’ run defense is much better than its secondary, which will match up well against Tony Pollard and a Dallas offense that runs more efficiently on the ground. If Pollard can be relatively contained, I don’t see this game reaching 51 points based on the Cowboys’ elite defense and suspect passing offense.

Texas Rangers @ Houston Astros

The Texas Rangers earned a Game 1 victory with a terrific performance from Jordan Montgomery. Nathan Eovaldi will try to mimic that performance today. Eovaldi allowed a .144 ISO and wOBA of .291 against 630 batters this season. However, he allowed a .170 ISO and wOBA of .324 to 344 righties. He was worse against righties this year and will take on an Astros team that should have six righties in the lineup.

Those righties have hit a .153 ISO and wOBA of .316 over the last 30 days, which isn’t great.

Meanwhile, it’ll be Framber Valdez on the mound for the Astros. Valdez has struggled over the last month, allowing a .341 wOBA. Valdez is a left-handed pitcher, giving up a .341 wOBA to his previous 97 batters. He’s typically worse against lefties but will only face three lefties in the Rangers’ lineup today. Valdez has walked 12.4% of batters in the last month but has also earned nearly 59% of ground balls in that time frame. He can escape damage with double plays when he gets ground balls.

With the Rangers’ lineup hitting a .076 ISO and wOBA of .282 against lefties in the last month, I’ll take the Under for this game.

Bet: Under 8.5 (-122)

Calgary Flames @ Washington Capitals

The first game for the Capitals was disappointing as they could only get 19 shots and were blanked by the Penguins. The mainstays of this team are getting older, and you wonder if they can sustain the level that has made them a playoff contender for decades.

The Flames are also coming off a loss to the Penguins but have a win under their belt. You have to like how their players on the top lines are performing early on, with Andrew Mangiapane, Elias Lindholm and Jonathan Huberdeau all coming in with multiple points. The goaltending has been a problem because the normally reliable Jacob Markstrom has struggled, with a .892 save percentage.

I don’t think the Caps will get blanked, but I’m not sure they’ll be much better. With Darcy Kuemper possibly not in the net, I like the Flames to come away with the win.

Bet: Flames Moneyline (-120)
