Denver Nuggets at Toronto Raptors

Losers of three straight, the Denver Nuggets are playing their worst ball of the season right now, and they may be without G Jamal Murray tonight in Toronto (see here for current injury reports). Murray is one of Denver’s best players, and the drop from him to either Reggie Jackson or Bruce Brown is significant. If he does indeed sit, the Raptors will undoubtedly be favored by more than one point. And if he plays, we still like Toronto’s chances. The Raptors nearly stole the two team’s previous meeting just eight days ago and should find their footing as they return home following a five-game road trip. One last note: the Nuggets are 15.8 Pts/Poss (points per 100 possessions) worse this season when playing on the road vs. at home.

Denver may rely more on Jokic to create offense in this game, but we don’t like him to be a big scorer in this contest. The Raptors have a lot of length/size in the frontcourt and a stable of capable defenders to throw at the likely MVP. As a result, Jokic only attempted eight shots and scored only 17 in the two team’s previous meetings, dating back to the 2020-2021 season. He has only mustered greater than 20 points twice against Toronto. It’s hard to foresee the shot volume necessary for Jokic to go Over this number, especially considering that the Raptors’ defensive game plan may be keen around him.

New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers

The gap between these two teams is stark, and the wrong team is favored as of writing. The Knicks rate sixth to the Blazers’ 24th in Adjusted Net Rating on the year, and the gap between these two is far broader. Since the All-Star break, no team has been as bad (on a Pts/Poss basis) as Portland. It is dumbfounding to see them open as a short favorite. They have the advantage of playing at home and will (should) have the best player in Damian Lillard, but these factors aren’t enough to tip the scales in their direction. The cherry on top: the Knicks have one of the best road records in the NBA this season (21-14 SU), rating fourth in Pts/Poss differential away from Madison Square Garden.

More has been asked of RJ Barrett this past week or so as G Jalen Brunson continues to nurse a foot injury, and he’s stepped up admirably. Over the Knicks’ past five games, Barrett is averaging 33 PRA, crossing this number with ease in four of five games. We like him to continue to thrive in such a prominent role, as he should have plenty of opportunity considering the projected high-scoring nature of this game.
