Dallas Mavericks

After the Dallas Mavericks tanked away last year’s season, I have no hope for this year’s team.

There’s already discussion about Luka Doncic’s injury. He could potentially miss time due to a mild calf sprain. While he was seen practicing a few days before the first game, I’d be cautious. Meanwhile, I think it’s also safe to assume that Kyrie Irving can’t lead a team.

While other teams added stars, the Mavericks made Grant Williams their x-factor. Williams will have an increased role from his time in Boston to now with the Mavericks. But he certainly doesn’t move the needle.

They also drafted Dereck Lively II with the No. 12 pick. But he’s 19 years old and will likely need more time to develop and mature into the player that the Mavericks believe he can be.

Although Josh Green just signed a three-year extension with the Mavericks, having him as your sixth man won’t get the job done. I’ll take the Under here.

Bet: Under 43.5 Wins (-110)

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks won 47 games last season. But now they’re sitting at 44.5 on the year?

I thought the Knicks got better than a year ago.

The starting lineup is still the same as last year, with Jalen Brunson, Quentin Grimes, R.J. Barrett, Julius Randle, and Mitchell Robinson. Meanwhile, the bench is deep, with Immanuel Quickley, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, and Jericho Sims. Isaiah Hartenstein gave the Knicks good minutes last year.

The Knicks also added another Villanova role player in Donte DiVincenzo, who should give the Knicks more depth on both sides of the ball.

New York is a top-ten team. They’ll win at least 45 games.

Bet: Over 44.5 Wins (-120)

Houston Rockets

The Rockets brought in Ime Udoka to be the head coach of the program. You can say what you want about Udoka. All of that is fair. But if we’re talking strictly basketball, he’s a tremendous coach who will get the most out of you.

Udoka took the Boston Celtics to the NBA Championship two years ago. While he likely won’t take the Rockets to the NBA Championship this year, he’s got a lot of exciting and intriguing pieces to work with this season.

The Rockets brought in Fred VanVleet as point guard. They also added Dillon Brooks at small forward. Those were the two massive additions in free agency. But the young talent on the roster should benefit from playing with those guys.

Jabari Smith Jr. was the first-round selection last season. He added about 13 points and seven rebounds last year. Meanwhile, Jalen Green should see significant growth this season after scoring 22 points. Houston’s got more young talent in Alperen Sengun and Tari Eason to go along with this year’s top draft picks like Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore.

This team has a lot of young talent that hasn’t performed consistently on the big stage. But the new additions from the draft and the veteran talent from free agency should really push the Rockets to greater heights this year.

Give me the Rockets to go Over 31.5 wins.

Bet: Rockets Over 31.5 Wins (-120)
