2024 NCAA Tournament Odds & Picks: Nebraska vs. Texas A&M
Nebraska 2024 NCAA Tournament Preview
If you value momentum when filling out your bracket, Nebraska may be your choice to make a surprising run deep into March. The Cornhuskers finished the season 7-2, ranking in the top 10 on Bart Torvik since Feb. 1. That impressive showing was thanks to the Cornhuskersâ defense. Over that 7-2 run, Nebraska has been suffocating defensively, ranking third in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency. They can be beaten from deep but they limit anything inside the arc, with the second-best midrange defensive shooting percentage.
Nebraska also limits opponents to 30% of their shots near the rim, the 13th-lowest in the nation. Beyond the perimeter look, the Cornhuskersâ defense has holes in transition play and they donât force many turnovers, so teams have an increased opportunity to get lucky with a higher shot volume. Nebraska has a reputable offense, with a top-50 pace and plenty of high-usage scorers. Keisei Tominaga is capable of making long threes. So is Brice Williams. But with only 45% of points coming from inside the arc, Nebraska struggles against teams that donât allow many perimeter looks. Against squads with a defensive three-point attempt percentage ranked in the bottom 25, the Huskers went 1-5, including a 29-point loss to Creighton and a loss to Minnesota.
Nebraska is playing better than its seed suggests but this is still a relatively straightforward team to gameplan against. Nebraska played only one neutral-court game out of conference this year and plays worse on the road, so the tournament atmosphere may come as a shock. Despite having a lot of solid players, the Cornhuskers donât have a go-to guy. Plenty of players can score but when they need a bucket, itâs unclear who that might be in crunch time. Nebraska has a lot of possible outcomes this tournament but donât blindly trust the Cornhuskers based on their recent play.
Texas 2024 A&M NCAA Tournament Preview
As a near-bubble team, the Aggies found themselves a nine-seed, so their impressive wins must have raised their floor. Finishing the season 5-1, it makes sense they made the tournament. Impressive wins follow tough losses. Dropping to Vanderbilt, Arkansas and LSU is not particularly promising and shows a clear floor for the Aggies. But everyone has ups and downs. While Texas A&M misses a lot of shots, ranking 353rd in effective field goal percentage, they miss a lot but make up for it by rebounding a lot.
Bringing in 42% of misses and not turning over the ball helps to rebound so much and earn free throw opportunities. Defensively, the Aggies are average. They rank between 100 and 200 in turnover percentage, defensive rebounding percentage, free throw rate, perimeter defense, and interior defense. They play inside, so they will allow a high percentage of perimeter looks, so it feels almost like Texas A&M has more paths to losing than winning. Wade Taylor and Tyrece Radford are solid but there is a clear cap on Buzz Williamsâ squad.
2024 NCAA Tournament Predictions: Nebraska vs. Texas A&M
Texas A&M is one of the worst shooting teams in March Madness. But it balances out thanks to the Aggies' ability on the glass. Texas A&M has earned an NCAA-best 42% of offensive rebounds this year. They've also shot just 28.4% from deep and 47% from inside the arc. But the more opportunities and chances, the more points.
Meanwhile, Nebraska's defense is really good. The Cornhuskers rank 15th in the nation in defensive effective field goal percentage. They'll force the Aggies to miss, but the Aggies will also have plenty of success on the glass. Over the entire SEC Tournament, Texas A&M scored at least 80 points in three games. Nebraska scored at least 87 in their two Big Ten Tournament games. Let's take the Over in this one.
