What are Team Futures?

Futures refers to any team-based wager for a future event or a result. These bets often do not pay out until weeks or even months from when they are initially placed. Bets for win totals and the Super Bowl winner are good examples of team futures bets.

New York Jets Super Bowl Odds (+15000)

I could start this preview with a joke about Zach Wilson’s infatuation with moms or how he’s got that dog in him, but I’m not going to do that. It’s not shocking that the biggest offseason news surrounding the Jets has nothing to do with football; however, the Jets did silently improve their roster in the past months. Heading into the 2022 season, we are looking at a young and potentially explosive offense, led by a second-year quarterback who dealt with injury his rookie season, a promising second-year wideout, and a rookie WR drafted inside the top ten. Hey... that sounds familiar. Right, that’s the exact description of the 2021 preseason Bengals. They both even had C.J. Uzomah! Will the trio of Zach Wilson, Elijah Moore, and Garrett Wilson explode onto the scene like Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, and Ja’Marr Chase did? Only time will tell. But in all seriousness, you can’t expect a Cinderella Super Bowl contender every season. That said, I’m not touching Jets Super Bowl futures with a ten-foot pole.

New York Jets Conference Winner Odds (+8500)

The Jets have not sniffed the Super Bowl since they won in 1968. 54 years. It’s been 54 years since the New York Jets won the conference championship. Sadly for Jets fans, I expect this drought to continue into the 2022-23 season. The Jets are at the bottom of the AFC East and close to the bottom of the entire AFC Conference.

Furthermore, with many positive transactions and injury returns, the AFC is now stacked beyond belief. The Denver Broncos acquired Russell Wilson, the Los Angeles Chargers vastly improved their defense, the Indianapolis Colts added Matt Ryan, and the Baltimore Ravens got Lamar Jackson back from injury. All four teams above didn’t make the playoffs last season. Competition in the AFC will be at an all-time high; frankly, the Jets are not at the same level. Personally, I find no value in this bet and will be staying away.

New York Jets Division Winner Odds (+2200)

New York is undoubtedly at the bottom of the barrel in the AFC East. Vegas has the top three teams in the division, the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots, projected 11.5, 8.5, and 8.5, respectively, while the Jets are only projected 5.5 wins. The significant dropoff in projected wins is not unexpected. The lowly Jets franchise has not won the division since 2002 and has only won it twice since 1969. Over the past two seasons, the Jets have a combined record of 6-27 (.182). In 2021, they lost 13 games total, eight of which were by 15 or more points. Additionally, with the Bills sitting as the current Super Bowl favorite (+650), I wouldn’t expect anyone to steal the division from them, let alone the Jets. The Jets winning the AFC East at +2200 is another lottery ticket bet I would avoid entirely.

New York Jets Win Totals Over/Under Odds (O5.5 -155, U6 -115)

The Jets’ win total is the most intriguing of all the team’s futures bets, with it sitting around 5.5 or 6 at most books. Surprisingly, the over has quickly become the most popular win total bet this offseason, per Caesars Sportsbook. This is likely due to several reasons, primarily the team’s shiny new additions from the NFL Draft and crazy enough that their face of the franchise was outed for sleeping with his mom’s best friend. Diving into the numbers, the Jets are favored in just three games this season with an average line of +4.1. Additionally, despite playing a 4th place schedule, the team will face the 6th hardest strength of schedule based on forecasted wins.

Furthermore, the Jets have a bottom five rest advantage throughout the season, meaning their schedule is filled with quick turnarounds. Finally, the team’s success in 2022 will be highly contingent upon the success of Zach Wilson. With just a 55.6% completion rate and a 2.3% TD ratio last season, Wilson will need to take a huge step forward in 2022 to get this team over the hump. As a result, I will be deviating from the consensus and betting under six total wins at -115 odds.

New York Jets to Make the Playoffs Odds (Yes +710, No -1000)

The Jets will not be making the playoffs this season. While the NFL is an unpredictable, chaotic league, there is too much talent at the top of the AFC for the Jets to break into the playoffs. I understand that the Bengals were in a similar situation coming into last season; however, there are not many case studies where a projected six-win team makes the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. The Jets have failed to make the playoffs for the last eleven seasons straight... don’t expect this year to be the one. While I would love to bet the Jets not to make the playoffs, -1000 odds offer no value.
