Best Bet to Win 2021 Super Bowl
The Ravens were the top NFL team during the last regular season, finishing 14-2 and earning a first-round bye. However, when they did get a chance to play in the postseason, they fell apart. So, what’s different this season?
Heading into the playoffs last season, we knew the one weakness of this Ravens team was their run defense. They gave up 4.5 rushing yards per attempt last season, and that was while playing in a division with the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers, who both struggled to run the ball consistently. Their final regular-season loss came against the Cleveland Browns, and they lost because they couldn’t stop Nick Chubb on the ground, giving up 165 rushing yards and three touchdowns (8.3 yards per attempt).
This is why the Tennessee Titans were a bad matchup, featuring the league’s rushing champion.
The Ravens addressed this weakness this offseason. The biggest move was when they traded for defensive lineman Calais Campbell, who is about 8-foot-13, by my estimation. Baltimore also signed Derek Wolfe, re-signed Pernell McPhee, franchise-tagged Matthew Judon, and drafted linebacker Patrick Queen. In other words, this offseason was about solving this weakness, which is bad news for the rest of the NFL.
While defenses should have more of an answer for MVP Lamar Jackson’s running ability, if he continues to progress as a pass, as third-year starting quarterbacks typically do, it doesn’t really matter. Putting a spy and contain on him only opens up weapons down the field. Speaking of these weapons, Marquise Brown is a speedster that did not get an offseason his rookie year, since he was recovering from injury. We should see his best self this season, which, again, is a problem for the rest of the league.
The Ravens have too many talented rushers and complementary receivers to stop consistently, which means they may average over 30 points again (31.9 PPG last season). When they get up, their pass defense will be able to thrive yet again. The difference in 2020 is that they now have the players needed to come from behind when the early game does not go as they hope.
