Seattle Seahawks vs. Detroit Lions Predictions
(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)
In 2023, Detroit broke out and ended up runners-up in the NFC. It was their offense that was elite. While they've brought back almost everyone from that unit, the results haven't returned. A big reason for this is the play of QB Jared Goff. In 2023, he turned back the clock to his 2018 season, where he was incredibly efficient while putting up big passing numbers. Through three games, he's already thrown four interceptions, a third of what he'd done last year. If he doesn't start picking things up, Detroit won't meet their potential on that side of the ball.
Standing in Goff's way this week is the second-ranked pass defense, per DVOA through three games. Seattle has managed to shut down their opponents' passing games so far but a closer look at the matchups indicates this might be a mirage. Bo Nix, Jacoby Brissett and Skylar Thompson have all had their shot at this defense. None had much success but Goff and this offense should be a tougher test.
Geno Smith will lead Seattle's offense on Monday night. He and the rest of the Seahawks have had a lot of success against this Detroit offense over the last two years. The passing attack led by DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett has given Detroit fits in each of the last two matchups. Although Detroit's defense has vastly improved this season, there are still some areas of concern. Rookie CB Terrion Arnold has had his moments. He's also had issues with defensive pass interference in his young career. Additionally, safety Brian Branch is doubtful with an illness and would be a big loss for Detroit.
This game feels as though it could be a breakout game for both of these offenses. Both have massive big-game potential and it's clear neither defense has been tested enough to say these are elite units. Expect some high scoring in this matchup between NFC playoff hopefuls.
