Top 3 NHL Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions: Tuesday (1/10)

20 teams hit the ice for tonight’s 10-game NHL slate, and we have a few intriguing matchups on tap. The Wild take on the Ranges in a cross-conference clash, the Devils go toe-to-toe with the Hurricanes as the top two teams in the Metropolitan and the Stars square off against the Islanders on Long Island.

Below I’ll break down my three best bets in the NHL tonight.

And check out our other picks for Tuesday:

Top 3 NHL Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions: Tuesday (1/10)

Vancouver Canucks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The Canucks began their five-game east coast road trip with a 7-4 loss to the Jets on Sunday. They’ll look to rebound tonight against a struggling Penguins team that’s just 1-4-2 over their last seven games. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. ET from PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Both of these teams are playing poorly as of late, as Vancouver is also just 1-4-0 over their last five games. During the five-game span, the Canucks have been outscored 22-14. However, no one should be surprised that the Canucks are giving up 4.4 goals per game over any random sample of games. Their defense and goaltending have been a major issue all season, as Vancouver is the 31st-ranked team defensively (3.74 opposing gpg).

I like for the Penguins to get back on track tonight against this unstable Canucks side. Being at home and playing a shaky defensive team, I think that this is a great opportunity for Pittsburgh to find its groove again. Let’s back the Penguins on the puck line in this spot.

Bet: Pittsburgh Penguins -1.5 (+130)

Seattle Kraken vs. Buffalo Sabres

The Kraken get set to take on the Sabres this evening as both teams enter on the second night of a back-to-back. This cross-conference showdown is set for 7:00 p.m. ET from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

These organizations are playing great right now, each picking up points in eight of their last 10 games. However, there’s one reason I cannot fully buy in on the Sabres yet – their defense. Buffalo comes into tonight’s game with the 24th-ranked defense (3.26 opposing gpg) and 26th-best penalty kill (73.02%). Since both teams are playing for the second straight night, we’ll likely get a matchup of backup goaltenders. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen should get the start for the Sabres, and despite a 9-3-1 record, the Finnish netminder has posted a 3.49 GAA and .894 SV%.

With Luukkonen in net, I think the Kraken have the edge here. If they can get any sound defensive play, they’ll have a great opportunity to collect the two points. Let’s lock in Seattle for this game that the oddsmakers see as a coin flip.

Bet: Seattle Kraken Moneyline (-105)

San Jose Sharks vs. Arizona Coyotes

The only people watching this Sharks vs. Coyotes game will be the die-hard fans and the gamblers. Puck drop for this Western Conference matchup is slated for 9:00 p.m. ET from Mullet Arena in Tempe, Ariz.

I’m going to take a shot with the Coyotes as slight underdogs at home tonight. Although they’re the fourth-worst team in the league, Arizona enters tonight’s game with a winning record at home. The Yotes are 7-4-2 at Mullet Arena, winning three out of their last four on home ice. Aside from the home record, the only other stat worth mentioning is that goaltender Karel Vejmelka is 6-1-2 at home with a 2.92 GAA and .914 SV%. Assuming that he gets the nod between the pipes, the Yotes should be in a good position to shut down the lowly Sharks’ offense. Let’s ride with the Desert Dogs at home tonight.

Bet: Arizona Coyotes Moneyline (+120)
