Tonight's midweek slate features eight games with a couple of intriguing matchups to keep an eye on. Top 3 NHL Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions: Tuesday (1/17)
Anaheim Ducks vs. Philadelphia Flyers
The Ducks and Flyers each played yesterday and come into tonight's game looking to snap losing streaks. For Anaheim, it was a 4-3 overtime loss, while Philadelphia got dominated 6-0 against the Bruins. This cross-conference showdown is set for 7:00 p.m. ET tonight from the Wells Fargo Center.
Anaheim's woes continue as they've now dropped four straight games, getting outscored 23-8 over the four-game sample. John Gibson has started each of those contests, and I expect he'll take a seat tonight, entering the second night of a back-to-back. That would lead to Anthony Stolarz getting the start between the pipes, and the 28-year-old has not been serviceable this season. He's 3-5-0 with a 3.88 GAA and .895 SV%. On the road, Stolarz sees his GAA tick up to 4.21.
I'll fade the backup netminder and lock in the Flyers on the puck line. Philadelphia has been playing well lately, winning seven of its last 10 games. Let's ride with the Flyers against one of the worst teams in the NHL.
Bet: Philadelphia Flyers -1.5 (+140 via DraftKings)
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Nashville Predators
The Predators got back in the win column last night, beating the Flames 2-1 on home ice. They'll look to keep things rolling tonight against a Blue Jackets team that's 3-13-0 over their last 16 games. Puck drop is set for 8:00 p.m. ET from Bridgestone Arena.
Nashville is currently a fringe playoff team, chasing the Flames by five points in the Wild Card standings (with two games in hand). If the Preds want to narrow the gap again, they'll need to pick up the two points tonight. I'm confident that they'll do so, and I'll back them on the puck line against the lowly Blue Jackets.
This is a tough matchup for Columbus, whose offense has been abysmal this season. They come into tonight's game ranked 30th in scoring (2.5 GPG) and dead last on the power play (14.78%). They'll take on a Nashville side that's 14th in both defensive scoring (2.7 GAA) and on the penalty kill (79.61%). Goals should be tough to come by for the Blue Jackets, and I expect the Predators to spread their lead out by multiple goals. Let's lock in Nashville on the puck line.
Bet: Nashville Predators -1.5 (-135 via DraftKings)
Buffalo Sabres vs. Chicago Blackhawks
Buffalo, another team looking to make a playoff push, gets set to take on Chicago on the second night of a back-to-back. The Sabres dropped a 4-1 contest to the Panthers last night, moving them to 21-19-2 on the season. Tonight's game is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET from the United Center in Chicago, IL.
The Sabres' strength this season has been their offense, which is second in scoring (3.8 GPG) and fourth on the man advantage (27.10%). They'll have a favorable matchup against a Blackhawks team that struggles in every aspect of the game - especially defense. Chicago's allowing 3.5 goals per game, which ranks 29th in the league. They're also 25th on the PK, killing off just 74.02% of their opponent's power play chances.
These are two teams trending in opposite directions, and I think we'll see the skill gap on display tonight in Chicago. Look for the Sabres to pour it on offensively and cover the puck line against the horrible Hawks.
Bet: Buffalo Sabres -1.5 (+150 via DraftKings)
