Washington Capitals at Minnesota Wild

The Capitals have already clinched a playoff spot, but they're playing for the overall No. 1 seed. Even though they lost to the Jets, they came away with a point. They currently hold a one-point lead for the Presidents' Trophy.

Until their playoff run begins, the focus is on Alex Ovechkin. He is on the brink of becoming the greatest scorer of all time, as he is six goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most all time.

Minnesota is losing ground in the playoffs as teams like St. Louis, Calgary and Vancouver get hot. They are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. They sit just five points ahead of the Canucks.

The Wild have had problems with consistency all season. This offense will not dominate, scoring just 2.68 goals per game with an expected 49.47% goal share. They have scored just one goal in the last two games.

However, they’re allowing only 2.81 goals and 3.08 high-dangerous shots per game. Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury in previous years switched off starts in past years, but Gustavsson has become the primary goalie in Fleury's final year of a Hall of Fame career. At times, both goalies have struggled. That cannot happen for this team if they want a chance at a playoff run.

The Capitals should take advantage of a struggling Minnesota team.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres have the fewest points in the Eastern Conference (64) after another season where they failed to meet expectations. They are on an awful 5-8-1 run, and neither side has been playing well.

The offense has some pieces, with Tage Thompson scoring 35 goals and Alex Tuch scoring 27, but the defense has been a letdown. They sit 29th in goals allowed per game (3.50). Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has been unable to replicate his breakout season last year, going from allowing 2.57 to 3.16 goals per game.

Sitting not too far from the Sabres in the East standings are the Penguins with the third-fewest points (69). We're looking at Alex Ovechkin, 21 years into his career, with a chance to win another Stanley Cup, while Sidney Crosby, in Year 20, is in the middle of rebuilding. There’s nothing wrong with Crosby as he's 11th in the league in points (79) and eighth in assists (54); the problem is he has a -22 plus/minus rating.

Pittsburgh’s goaltending has been awful, ranking 31st in goals allowed (3.51). However, it has gotten better with the return of Tristan Jarry, who's 4-2-1, allowing 2.71 goals per game and has a .906 save percentage in the seven games since his return.

Luukkonen has allowed 10 goals in two games this season to the Penguins, while Jarry has allowed three in one. The Pens could ride Jarry's recent resurgence to a victory.
