NHL Same Game Parlay Odds & Picks: Tuesday (3/19)

We finally hit our first NHL Same Game Parlay on the fifth attempt last week. The New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes competed in an old-school, physical Eastern Conference heavyweight bout that resulted in the Rangers pulling off the road upset 1-0. Our three-leg SGP was comprised of under 6.5 total goals at -154 odds, with the Rangers’ alternate puck line at +2.5 (-350 odds), and finally, Carolina’s total team goals under 3.5 (-138 odds) cashed without much discomfort.

We’re looking to extend this SGP win by cashing back-to-back weeks on the ice. Tuesday’s NHL slate, per usual, is loaded, offering 13 games to target in various betting markets. With so many teams competing, there’s a higher probability that oddsmakers have misjudged a few of their lines, which we’ll look to exploit for a nice profit during teams’ final push to clinch a berth in the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs.

New Jersey Devils Moneyline (-137)

We’re heading to a Metropolitan Division matchup between the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins. Both teams are several points out of qualifying for the final Wild Card berth in the Eastern Conference, while neither has fared well in recent outings. The Devils are 3-7 in their last ten games, while the Penguins are 3-6-1.

Something has to give in this contest, held at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday night. New Jersey did manage to grab a dominant 6-2 win on the road over Dallas during its four-game road trip, which was otherwise fruitless. Pittsburgh has won two of its last three, which is good in a vacuum, until realizing these victories came against Detroit and San Jose.

The Devils have beat the Penguins six consecutive times head-to-head, including once earlier this year in Pittsburgh, 5-2. Timo Meier has been the goal-scoring machine for New Jersey, with contributions from Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes as well. The firing of former head coach Lindy Ruff has freed up the pace and style of the Devils’ offense, which led to their six goal outing against the Stars a few days ago.

Yes, it’s risky betting on the Devils right now, but Pittsburgh is just as bad, if not worse, with horrendous goaltending that puts pressure on their offense to outscore their opponent. Multiple goaltenders picked up at the trade deadline by New Jersey has resulted in opponents scoring three or fewer goals in three of their last four games, so returning to home ice, the Devils should be ready to outplay a spiraling Penguins team to get only their third win in March.

Over 6.5 Total Goals (-106)

The over being available at -106 odds is too good to pass on. Pittsburgh’s goaltending is atrocious, allowing three or more goals in seven of their last eight games played. Trends point to the under 6.5 total goals being a strong wager in this matchup, however, New Jersey’s explosiveness on offense, paired with their sub-par defense and goaltending, combine to make a perfect recipe for over 6.5 total goals to be scored in this game.

The Devils are 37-30-1 toward the over this season, while the Penguins are 26-36-5 toward the under. However, lately, Pittsburgh has hit seven total goals in three consecutive games, with inferior opponents such as Detroit and San Jose each scoring three goals. A 7-4 loss to the Rangers over the weekend, which is a team that the Devils narrowly lost to 3-1 a week ago, demonstrates how weak Pittsburgh is defensively. There should be a lot of confidence shown toward New Jersey overs based on their body of work this season.

Same Game Parlay: +221

As a result of parlaying New Jersey moneyline and over 6.5 total goals, we’re getting better odds at +221 than we did a week ago for our winning three-leg SGP, which came out to +125 odds. We’re betting on a game with two teams in desperation mode, who both surrender goals at a high-rate. The Devils’ still rank 12th in goals scored per game, 3.2, while allowing 3.5 per contest.

Pittsburgh’s sitting at 2.9 for and allowed, although in recent games, their offense has been humming, while the defense and goaltending have been porous at best. Based on New Jersey’s matchup history against the Penguins, 6-0 entering Tuesday’s game during a return to home ice, combined with the leaky goaltending both teams roster, we’re banking on the Devils to score at least three goals to give us a chance to cash this +221 SGP.

Ideally, a 4-3 or 5-2 Devils win is best case scenario, although Pittsburgh did wind up shut out in a 6-0 loss to Washington less than two weeks ago. Fortunately, New Jersey has allowed f0ur of their past five opponents to score at least three goals, with the only exception, ironically, coming in a 6-2 road win over the Stars. Neither of these teams has inspire confidence lately, but one of them has to win. The Penguins are 0-5 on the road in their last five trips, which bodes well for our SGP to hit two weeks in a row.
