NHL Same Game Parlay Odds & Picks: Tuesday (4/9)

The 2023-24 NHL regular season continues to wind down but there are a few teams still vying for the final playoff seeds. Most notably, the second Wild Card seed in the Eastern Conference, which has five teams within two points of each other. Currently, the New York Islanders’ four-game win streak has them occupying the third playoff seed in the Metropolitan Division, but Pittsburgh, Washington, and Philadelphia all remain within one win of tying the Islanders’ for this coveted divisional spot.

Ironically, Tuesday’s slate of NHL games brings together Detroit and Washington for a high-stakes matchup. The Red Wings currently occupy the final Wild Card seed at 84 points, owning a tiebreaker over Pittsburgh and holding a one-point edge over the Capitals and Flyers. The stage is set for an aggressive, back-and-forth game to play out.

Last week, we looked like we were in the clear in the early stages of the third period to cash our two-leg, +203 SGP. That was until the Devils gave up five unanswered goals in the third period to the Penguins, losing 6-3 in a brutal beat for our Devils’ moneyline leg.

Detroit Red Wings Moneyline (-154)

Due to the high-stakes nature of Tuesday’s Eastern Conference playoff race, we’re heading right to the action between Detroit and Washington. The Red Wings are favored to win with -154 moneyline odds at home, going 2-1 SU in their last three games. Both of these teams have been struggling down the stretch, but momentarily, Detroit holds the final Wild Card playoff seed in the Eastern Conference at 84 points.

Washington is hot on their tails, except the Capitals have lost six consecutive games to fall out of playoff contention. Most of their opponents during this slump have been playoff contenders like Boston, Toronto, and Carolina, but the Capitals did lose to the Penguins and Senators in two of their past three contests.

The Red Wings have covered the puck line in seven of their past eight games and are 10-2 as home favorites coming off of a win this season. Washington’s goaltender, Charlie Lindgren, has surrendered three or more goals in five of his past six starts, further demonstrating why we’re backing Detroit at home to win outright on Tuesday night.

Over 5.5 Total Goals (-138)

Since Lindgren is in the crease for Washington, we’re betting on over 5.5 total goals to be scored in this matchup. Alex Lyon is confirmed for Detroit and while he’s been the better goaltender in this matchup, he has also allowed four goals in two of his past five starts. Conversely, he’s been a bit tighter against teams like Tampa Bay, Florida, and Buffalo, holding them under three goals in each game, so this is why the goal total line is set to 5.5 instead of 6.5.

The over has cashed for Washington as road underdogs coming off of a loss with a 7-2-2 record this season. Each of these teams’ previous games this season have hit at least seven total goals, while the season series is split 1-1 for outright wins. The Red Wings poured in eight goals against the Capitals back in February during their home game at Little Caesars Arena, so backing over 5.5 as the second leg of our Same Game Parlay makes a lot of sense.

Same Game Parlay: +179

Detroit hasn’t won back-to-back games since mid-March, so there is certainly some risk involved with this Same Game Parlay wager. However, Washington’s six-game losing skid has come against good teams and bad teams alike. The Capitals’ goaltending is a big liability and while they will be playing with just as much desperation as the Red Wings, Detroit’s offense ranks ninth in goals per game (3.3), including seventh in powerplay goals (0.7) per game this season.

The Capitals’ last win came against Detroit back on March 26th at home in D.C. Now, they’ll attempt to end their streak against the same opponent once again in the Motor City on Tuesday night. Ultimately, this feels like a game that Detroit wins 4-2 or 4-3 in overtime. We’re investing in the better offense and goaltending in a game that should cede plenty of goals in a playoff-like atmosphere, wagering a unit on this +179 NHL SGP.
