Overview
The No. 11 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish aims to keep a fascinating NCAA Tournament historical trend going that at least one double-digit seed has advanced to the Sweet 16 in all but two seasons since 1985 (1995 and 2007). In addition, at least three double-digit seeds have made the regional semifinals 15 times in that span. Meanwhile, Texas Tech is searching for its third trip to the Sweet 16 in the last four NCAA Tournaments. The Red Raiders are no strangers to deep NCAA Tournament runs recently, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2018 and the national championship game in 2019. Conversely, Notre Dameâs first two wins in this NCAA Tournament were the schoolâs first since 2017.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview
Something about playing in the First Four has gotten teamsâ motors started well entering the Round of 64. Notre Dame became the tenth First Four team to advance to the Round of 32, doing so in convincing fashion as 78-64 winners over No. 6 seed Alabama. Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey is no stranger to the NCAA Tournament, appearing for the 15th time in his coaching career and 13th with the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dameâs First Four game against Rutgers did not end until after midnight on Wednesday. Then they had a long flight to San Diego and a quick turnaround on Friday afternoon to face the Crimson Tide. However, that did not stop Notre Dame from once again lighting it up from deep, as their ten 3-pointers makes the sixth time in the last 11 games they have made double-digit 3-pointers.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Preview
Texas Tech is known for its stifling man-to-man defense that ranks first in KenPomâs adjusted defensive efficiency metric. However, the Red Raiders offense looked more impressive in their opening-round win over Montana State. Texas Tech shot a blistering 66.7% (36-for-54) from the field, including 60% (12-of-20) from 3-point range. The Red Raidersâ 97 points is a tournament record and breaks their previous high of 92 points set in 1996 against North Carolina. Montana State looked overwhelmed in its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996 and trailed by 14 points less than five minutes into the game.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Pick and Prediction
Can the Red Raiders follow up their best offensive performance of the season and best in their NCAA Tournament history with another solid outing against Notre Dame? The Fighting Irish do not force many turnovers, as their 15.2% turnover percentage ranks 333rd in the country. That should help Texas Techâs case, as turnovers have been an issue for them all season.
The biggest area Notre Dame can exploit in this matchup is the 3-point line, where they shoot an incredible 38.1% as a team (ranks tenth in Division I) on the season. In addition, four Notre Dame players shoot better than 35% beyond the arc, and the Fighting Irish are getting solid production from some of their more unlikely sources of late. The best example is Cormac Ryan, who has averaged 20 ppg over the last four games and is coming off a season-high 29-point performance against Alabama.
It is imperative for Notre Dame big man, Paul Atkinson, to stay out of foul trouble, as his interior presence is vital on both ends of the court against a physical Texas Tech team. Notre Dameâs weary legs should not be as much of an issue in this game since they did not have to travel after Fridayâs win, and we look for them to shoot well once again and stay close in this game.
Pick: Notre Dame +7.5 (-110 at BetMGM)
