Patrick Reed 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.

Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.

But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.

Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.

Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.

Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.

McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Patrick Reed 2023 British Open Betting Outlook

Reed has never seriously contended in an Open Championship, though he finished 10th at Royal Portrush in 2019 and tied for 12th at Troon in 2016. It’s worth noting that Reed caught fire last weekend at the LIV Golf International London event, played at the Centurion Club. He went 64-65 in his final two rounds to finish in a tie for second. Granted, a lot of players were posting rounds in the 60s at that event, but Reed was in fine form nevertheless, and he’s one of the best putters in the world. If he can handle the conditions at Hoylake, and if his putter gets hot, Reed could get himself into contention for the Claret Jug. Still, Reed has to be considered a long shot, and I’m not sure there’s value to betting him to win outright even at +7000.

Patrick Reed 2023 British Open Betting Advice

Reed is a fantastic putter and a fiery competitor, but his Open Championship is spotty. Whether it’s betting him to win, to finish top 10 or to finish top 40, I don’t think you’re getting enough value to merit an investment. Pass.
