Details:

  • Current Line: O/U 48 | ATL -3

Overview:

Both teams enter this season with new offensive-minded head coaches. The Eagles' Nick Sirianni hopes to mold second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts into a star, while Smith and the Falcons hope 36-year-old Matt Ryan still has something left in the tank.

The Falcons were a paltry 4-12 last season, blowing a myriad of late leads while playing poor defense - ranking 19th against the pass.

While the defense remains suspect, their offense will be sturdy with the veteran Ryan under center and Calvin Ridley at receiver - who finished 5th in receiving yards last season with 1,374 and 9 touchdowns. Add in rookie tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Mike Davis, and we should see their typically robust offense return.

Philadelphia fell on their face last season, going 4-11-1 and finishing last in the NFC East. Much of this had to do with injury, as the Eagles ranked top-10 in games lost to injury.

The Eagles offense ranked 28th in the NFL in passing in 2020, averaging just 207.9 yards per game.

But it wasn't all bad news. One bright spot was the play of rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts, who took over after Carson Wentz was benched. The dual-threat QB threw for 1,061 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for three - showing glimpses of significant upside along the way.

This team also possesses a solid offensive line and did post the third-most sacks in 2020 - two things that shouldn't decline much or at all under Sirianni.

Trends:

  • Eagles are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games as a road underdog
  • Eagles are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Atlanta
  • Over is 32-15 in Eagles last 47 road games

Bottom Line

The preseason has not been kind to either team, but I believe they kept things close to their chest, with both squads led by two new coaches. Look for both to open up the playbooks to begin the season. Also, they’ll play this game in a dome, so weather won’t be an issue. Look for fireworks in this one.

Pick: Over 48
